Lincoln Center Theater to be Renamed After $100 Million Benefactor

2008_07_koch.jpgDavid H. Koch, the richest man in NYC with a net worth of $17 billion, is donating $100 million towards the renovation of the New York State Theater at Lincoln Center. The City Opera and New York City Ballet perform in the space, and Koch told the NY Times, “I’ve been going to the New York State Theater for 40 years. I can assure you, I would not make a gift of this magnitude unless I was absolutely convinced that the quality of the work was world class.” Other parts of Lincoln Center are currently under renovation.

Who is he and where did he come from?

He made all that money being the mayor of New York City before Dinkins?

What's it with renaming New York institutions of late?

I'm not as aggrieved by this on even a similar molecular level as the awful decision to rename the Public Library, but can't they just be satisfied that they donated the money instead of them donating the money and getting their name on the building.

Is that how it's going to be now? Manhattan embroiled in a bidding war for people to stamp their names on the most recognisable landmarks and familiar structures in a multi-million dollar version of a pissing match?
