The Danny Meyer-ization of Citi Field

2008_07_food_dannymeyer.jpgTeam Danny Meyer has partnered up with Aramark to bring some serious food to the new Citi Field. When it opens next season, Mets fans will have both Shake Shack and Blue Smoke on the premises along with a taqueria and a Belgian fry stand to be called Pop Fries. The stadium's Sterling Club will also receive the Meyer treatment, with the Union Square Hospitality Group handling all of the dining options there. According to the USHG press release, these include:

Sterling Market: this casual cafe will serve classic, artisanal comfort foods
Sterling Beer & Wine Bar: located inside Sterling Market, this venue will offer specialty brews and an extensive selection of wines from around the world, available by the glass or bottle
Sterling Dining Room: reservations required, with limited seating for walk-in guests, will present a small-plates menu ideally suited to game day dining
Sterling Bar & Lounge: offering guests a view of the large outdoor patio and ball field, the bar and lounge will serve specialty cocktails and small bites
Sterling In-Seat Service: waiter service will feature "Best of Ballpark" food from the outfield concourse
Apparently, Meyer is a Mets fan and has been a season ticket holder for quite some time, and is very pleased to be putting his mark on the new stadium. "What you eat and drink – and how it's all served – has become a major part of the ballpark experience, and we are eager to contribute as much as we can to why people will love going to Citi Field." According to the Times, the Mets owner and Aramark are negotiating with other noteable local restaurateurs. We'd like to see a NYC Icy stand (or maybe even the Lemon Ice King of Corona), an outpost of Caracas Arepa Bar, and perhaps a Dosa cart for the vegan fans. Plus, it'd be a shame to lose Mama's; hopefully there will be space for them as well.

yankee tickets are off-the-wall expensive because they're not getting a sponsor, it will be called yankee stadium and the $50 seats are now over $500.

With both Yankees and Mets changing stadiums in the same year, people will be shocked by how quickly the "New York crowd" will vanish from the city. Its amazing how silent a stadium can get when half of the seats are luxury boxes and wine bars.

I thought Meyer was a Cardinals fan, since he's from St. Louis and all.

I love the Mets, and I love Shea, but I'm kind of excited for better food and alcohol options. Though who wants to have a sit-down dinner when you're at a game?

"Pop Fries"? Are you serious? Wow, that's... wow.

I wonder how much this food will cost -- will a burger be $15 or something ridiculous like that? (I can't even imagine what "classic, artisanal comfort foods" would cost.)

And will it take 45 minutes to get a Shake Shack burger?

To #2...sad, but true. Fans don't go to baseball games anymore -- only corporations can afford the tickets. Go to a Braves game some time -- the team might as well be playing checkers for all the attention the attendees (I can't call them fans) pay.

Will they still serve Nathan's fries?

With Aramark behind the food, I guarantee the quality of the food will go down. I mean, have you seen some of the product they use? Not to mention the employees they hire that don't give a shit about quality or service.

You know, what ever happened to just serving greasy food and decently cold beer.

They're trying to change what is quintessentially a buddy sport made for real people into something trendy and overly expensive.

This will backfire if the Yankees don't start winning World Series quick.

And the mets better be battling them for it.

last shea game for me was 1982 lol. Sorry I wont ever set foot in a ballpark again. I keep the money at home now .

Let me know when I can afford a ticket to Citi Field let alone afford to eat anything there. I have not had a COLA increase in three years while the Execs have been congratulating each other with bonuses.

At least there is the Brooklyn Cyclones and Staten Island Yankees to watch some baseball at the ballpark for a price which wouldn't break your wallet.

So you eat the Alain Ducasse hot dog from which end?

I'm enjoying the last affordable Mets games on my Sunday ticket plan
