IKEA Shuttle Buses Wildy Popular with Non-Shoppers

2008_07_ikeamini.jpgThe free coach style shuttle buses that deliver riders from two Brooklyn subway stops to the new Red Hook IKEA are filling up with passengers who never set foot inside the Swedish retailer. "I'd say before one o'clock, about half the riders from Smith and Ninth Street don't even go into IKEA," one bus driver told the Daily News, adding that many riders are going to a local methodone clinic for treatment. And, as predicted, freeloaders are pulling the same move with the free Water Taxi between IKEA and lower Manhattan, an area also renowned for its methadone.

TSOL: Sorry, you don't like Target because "ghetto" people shop there? You want to keep "those people" out of IKEA? We don't need racists like you in Brooklyn. You should move back to the suburbs where you belong.

  • NannyState

They make you talk while chewing your swedish meatball so you don't spit it out and attempt to sell it on the street.

I 'd think that IKEA wouldn't want those people in the store in the first place. If a free bus ride keeps IKEA from going the way of Target (ie ghetto) then that's a small price to pay!

"It's got AC; it doesn't get overcrowded," she said. "You have your own space. It's strange, but people are more behaved on this bus. It's just more relaxing."

I love this quote from a Daily News article.

Makes me wish there were more private buses and vans running on non-exclusive city bus routes. That would plug the gap between demand and service.

Somebody in Stockholm is now fast at work designing the Varsknya junkie death futon complete with compartment for hypodermic needles in the armrest.

When Ikea starts selling methadone, these addicts might pick up an attractive, energy-efficient desk lamp as well. Good for business.

  • monkeymafia

Sure the methadone is free but the instructions are in French and there always seems to be a piece missing...

  • virgil

Wait: topnotch Swedish design, free meatballs, AND a free ride to the methadone clinic? Truly, this is the best of all possible worlds.

I mean, I think part of this deal was the benefit of building the Ikea. They had to make bargains with everyone to get it done, so they have stuff like this that would give back to the community.

Which offering free transit to a relatively hard to reach area does. If they wanted it differently they'd have you get a voucher at the store or something.

  • JMH

Umm... I'm no comedian, but I'm pretty sure that was a joke.

  • spiritross

    I think this is great

People might as well take advantage of the free transit

  • ides_of_march

I think they've got lower Manhattan confused with Amsterdam.

What? Please explain how "lower Manhattan" is an area "renowned for its methadone."

Someone needs to get a few snapshots of the class disparity going on in these buses. I imagine it something like this weegee shot:

My I suggest an IKEA credit card as a pass :) kindof like free parking at Bloomingdale's near large malls.
