let's face facts. we all know that cover stories on a-rod's divorce, or paris hilton being hauled into jail, or amy winehouse, or britney, or any of the other celebrity disasters are not as "serious" news as the G8 putting sanctions on Robert Mugabe, or the current debate over FISA, or the very real possibility that we could be running out of resources like gallium, copper, etc. But newspapers are businesses. and those covers sell papers. same for gothamist. You think this story didn't rack up a ton of page views? They do. And most people will gladly spend 5 minutes reading about this stuff. Ergo, it's news. We may not like it, we may wish we lived in a more enlightened society where stuff like this wasn't splashed all over our news sites, but as long as people read, buy, and comment on the story, it's news. And even in a more objective sense, the collapsing marriage of New York's biggest baseball star is definitely worthy of some coverage. You want serious news, read the Wall Street Journal, or the Financial Times, or The Economist. You want New York life, warts and all, read gothamist (or your tabloid of choice) and stop acting like they should be above covering something which, frankly, the majority of their readers are interested in.

I guess it seems a little silly and so obvious to bother writing this. But really, just because they are rich and famous it doesn't make their personal problems any more interesting. Lots of people have marital problems. So what. Cheap gossip column crap. Boring. And Larry King... Wow. A baseball player and a famous singer. Wow! Why should I care about any of this?
