I don't think these people are waiting in line because they think the phone will sell out. They obviously love Apple and the fanfare of a new product going on sale. In the past, Apple has given away freebies (giftcards, t-shirts, raffled off iPods) so they're probably also waiting for that stuff, too. My boyfriend went to the Leopard release and got a free t-shirt. Which he promptly sold on eBay for $40.

I think waiting in line is an end in itself, giving purpose and meaning to an otherwise purposeless, meaningless existence. After all, if you're not being processed, and you're not on a queue to be processed, you may have fallen out of the machine altogether. What then? What then?

wait it out bitch! I remember the line waiters last year and how they were all crowing when they got their Iphones first but they didn't realize they could have just gone to an AT&T kiosk the next day and get it hassle free instead of waiting in a huge line at an apple store. Then apple dropped the price by 200 smackers the next 2 months and they looked stupid as fuck.

Having a line is a win-win-win. The WhoFarm gets to publicize their cause, Apple gets free publicity for their product, and commenters who pretend to be cooler than people that stand on line (even though, really, the standing on line doesn't affect them at all) get to complain on Gothamist!

And that people who are actually inside the store at that moment will be at an advantage over those standing outside it?
