The 90-year-old man mauled by a neighbor's pit bulls yesterday morning had his left leg amputated. Henry Piotrowski's niece said he will probably lose one of his arms.
The dogs belonged to James McNair, a registered sex offender, who was charged with, per the Staten Island Advance, "having unlicensed dogs, not having his dogs on a leash and fireworks possession." Neighbors say that they have called 311 and the police repeatedly about the pit bulls, which were tranquilized and later euthanized yesterday afternoon. The Daily News reports police say by the time they would arrive, the dogs would be gone, and "said loose dogs were an ASPCA matter."
Neighbor Reginald Bell who helped chase the dogs from Piotrowski's lawn was in shock over the attack, "It was horrible. I could not believe these dogs were eating this man like lions on a gazelle. This is not Zimbabwe. They were eating this man alive...There was nothing but bone, blood and cartilage." Piotrowski's niece Elaine Sutton said she "couldn't even distinguish" her WWII veteran uncle's face but remained hopeful, noting he "is a tough guy, so if anyone is going to survive something like this it's gonna be Uncle Hank."

Pit Bulls do not have to be mean, there are people who own them who love them and take good care of them. But these dog-thug a-holes have to go.

Pits are not bad dogs. Unfortunately thugs like this dickwad are attracted to them and raise them to be vicious, just like they raise their kids (who ultimately commit crimes).
I'm a middle-upper class white woman professional and I've got a pitmix who I rescued and have raised since she's a puppy. She wouldn't eat an old man, she's afraid of our cat. It's all about the way they're raised.

McNair is a complete waste of space on this planet.
McNair is a level 2 sex offender, which means moderate risk of re-offense. It's no surprise that he doesn't care about the law. I've had to deal with another level 2 in the past. He's a liar, a thief, and just an overall selfish bastard that I wouldn't trust with $5. According to the sex offenders registry, McNair's address was under investigation, so he may not have notified the authorities the last time he moved as he is required by law for the rest of his life. Again, no surprise. If it were up to me, level 2 and 3 sex offenders would be sent off to some maximum security island somewhere so they could never endanger society again.

Yes, I can believe I wrote that. What's the matter? The truth hurts? Who do you think is committing crimes in this city? Take a look at Gothamist maps -- where are the shootings and stabbings? The middle class white neighborhoods?
I'm a criminal defense lawyer, I think I know a thing or two about thugs. I represent them in court all day long.
Responsible dog owners don't let their dogs roam off leash and don't train them to be vicious. But irresponsible dog owners tend to be irresponsible in other parts of their life as well, whether it's criminal behavior or just the sheer incapacity to be a productive member of society -- a cycle that perpetuates from generation to generation. Break the cycle and build a better community instead of denying that this shit happens.
I'm amazed that the victim is still alive. What an incredible trauma for anyone that age. The sex-offender needs to go to prison for the rest of his life. They gave him a chance and look what happened. No more chances.
