15-Year-Old Fatally Shot in Harlem

2008_06_allsbrook.jpgA teenager walking home from a party was fatally shot near West 127th Street and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard around 2:30 a.m. yesterday morning. Nathan Allsbrook was shot in the shoulder, and the bullet traveled into his heart.

Police suspect Allsbrook was was hit by a stray bullet. The NY Times says the shell casing "was found a substantial distance" from where Allsbrook had been standing and the Daily News suggests the shot was fired "likely by someone goofing around with a gun." No arrests have been made yet.

Allsbrook is the third teen to be killed in four days--a 15-year-old was fatally stabbed in Queens on Wednesday and a 17-year-old was shot in Brooklyn on Saturday--and his father lamented to WABC 7, "It's just crazy, kids killing kids. I don't get it. I don't get it." He was a student at Richard High School, a Catholic school, regularly attended church and loved sports, especially basketball. His older brother told the Times, "He used to always pray a lot. He used to always tell me to watch out for haters.”

Fact check: therehttp://gothamist.com/prof... a flyer in the neighborhood where this happened posted by police and it has the murder occurring at "1700 hours." (Odd how they use military time on notices for civilians.) Anyway if I'm not mistaken, 1700 hours = 5 p.m..

Aint nothing to do about racism. We're just a very cynical bunch. If it were a white person people here would be saying the exact same shit. Get off your high horse.

  • twakum

well, anti gentrifiers, those that accuse new residents of jacking up prices, making new restuarants, etc...they also DONT KILL PEOPLE. Ass clowns, Sharpton and the gang, what maroons. gentrify means 15 year olds stop dying on the streets, mm K?

  • The Edge

#1- Would it have made you feel better about yourself if, say, he got hit by a car instead?

    Or stabbed in the chest?

  • Spirit of 76

Obviously, "Albert Sharpton" doesn't know about the big comment purge yesterday when Jake Dobkin deleted a lot of troll posts. I guess he's about to find out.

Google map that intersection my friends. Surprise, surprise; what are those massive things northwest of the intersection.

You know what? Projects or otherwise, I grew up with this bullshit and I'm tired.

Sell off NYCHA property. Then use the money for more police cams and tax credits for private security cams.

I don't care if that kid was a valedictorian who got accepted to the Sorbonne. He has as much right as I had to get home alive.

    So tired of this bullshit.

cuntry- I'm a born and bred NYer and I never hung out at 2:30 am. Then again, I had strict parents. Ergo, that was my point about parents being more mindful of their kids whereabouts.

  • cuntry

You fucks from Ohio, in New York, growing up, at 15, coupled with "inflation" due to the internet and teens getting older faster, it is perfectly normal for a 15 year old to go out til 2:30 on a Saturday night.

  • Albert Sharpton

Look at him, obviously he was in the bloods, look at the bright red graduation get up. ..probably packing heat under that cap of his.

Would it have better if the victim had been 30 years old?

The essence of Harlem hard at work. Gentrify that bitch.

  • Snoopy

I thought Harlem was being gentrified and all is well up there except for those that want to keep Harlem as it was.

Many are commenting on why a 15 year old is out 2:30 am but that is not an issue. He was walking home not going to cause trouble or doing any illegal activity. He was 15 not 5. Teens are at an age to start learning and experiencing life and taking on more responsibilities. Usually when you're in your teens you start having those "teens" urges like wanting your first car or going on your first date. So him being 15 and out at 2am means nothing, he was just being a 15 year old teen, out by himself and coming home from a party which is not illegal. This is just a sad event, nothing to do when him being out so late or reflects on the parenting of this child.

I thought video games kept kids indoors which in turn made them fat.

I see teens out at 2:30am in the suburbs hanging out by the railroad stations. they too, have no regard for public or personal property.

  • tstroke

I see nothing shocking about a 15 yr old walking around their neighborhood at 2:30am on a saturday night in the summer...

  • Anna_Merkin

Wow, this is horrible and sad. I was wondering what a kid was doing out at that time of night too, but many of the people I know who grew up in NYC describe their teenage years as filled with parties at clubs and bars in the city - and this was a time when the city was considerably more dangerous than it is now. That said, it's a shame how bad parts of Harlem remain.

  • I was up there yesterday at around 6pm and honestly the area is a fucking cesspool/war zone. There's absolutely no care for personal property, public property and certainly human life. I also the family and friends of this child huddled speaking to Fox 5.

  • thefacts

    Jen,

I was being ironic. No reflection on you.

  • whantmoore

I agree that this kid should not be walking around at 2:30 in the am but I don't think his punishment should be death. I only hope this serves as a warning to the youth that you don't need to be out at 2:30 in the AM if you are under 18.

  • gossipgirl

The person who fired the gun may very well have not had a "legal" gun.

Plus, the Supreme Court simply ruled that we have the right, not that more guns are needed. The ruling was in defense of liberty.

  • JRod5417

Kojak- I was thinking the same thing. This could have happened to anyone and the fact that it happened to a 15 year old kid compounds the tragedy. Parents really need to be more vigilant about how late their children should be allowed to stay out.

  • smitty

Can we get illegal guns off the streets? K thanks.

  • Kojak

What is a 15 year old boy doing walking around Harlem at 2:30am???

  • Jen Chung

@thefacts, sadly, yes, but it doesn't mean we have to ignore it.

  • thefacts

Isn't this the same story that has been appearing for the last 3 or 4 weeks, every Monday.

  • David

But remember, the Supreme Court of the United States says we need more guns, not fewer.

    Morons.
