Outrage Over Serbian Student's Alleged Upstate Attack

2008_06_miladan.jpgOver the past week, American officials have questioned why a Serbian student at Binghamton University was allowed to flee the country while he was charged with beating another student into a coma. Today, the Serbian Consul General Slobodan Nenedovic tells the Post, "I will think about resigning, absolutely."

On May 4, Miladin Kovacevic (pictured), a basketball player at 6' 9" and 260 pounds, allegedly beat up Bryan Steinhauer (5'6" and 135 pounds), thinking Steinhauer groped a friend's girlfriend at a bar. Though the girlfriend said she wasn't touched, Kovacevic reportedly attacked and Steinhauer, a Brooklyn resident, suffered shattered cheeks and a fractured skull and remains in critical condition.

Serbian vice consul general Igor Milosevic put up $100,000 cash bail (upstate law enforcement says they thought it was a big amount for upstate) for Kovacevic in early June, and the 20-year-old fled the country with an emergency passport, since he had already surrendered his regular one. Senator Charles Schumer has asked that Kovacevic be extradited, noting the U.S.'s extradition treaty with Serbia and how the "federal law enforcement must now step in and do everything in its power to bring justice to the Steinhauer family as quickly as possible."

However, there's confusion about whether Serbian officials want to extradite Kovacevic; consul general Nenecovic said to the Post, "I'm not quite sure if Serbia has an extradition policy, but I am sure that Kovacevic will be faced with prosecution in Serbia." The Daily News' Michael Daly suggests cutting off Serbian funding if their officials don't send the accused back to face charges upstate.

Kovacevic's parents spoke to the Post and his father said, "We feel he is a victim of small-town values ganging up against a foreigner. He was targeted because he was Serb and a very large man." And a family friend told the Daily News Kovacevic was defending himself. In the meantime, Steinhauer's mother says her son is "slowing emerging from his coma."

    Hi thefacts!

The Serbs Contribution to the 20th century history:

Serbs have brake the Solun front, and that was the most important thing for ending the WW1. About heroism of serbian soldiers many western generals have spoken, among them general fon Makenzen (German), general de Gaul (French), and many others...

Serbs have their own country from 680 year a.c. (according to the books of history- maybe even earlier)- and how old USA are? Serbia have never ever been part of Austro-Hungarian Empire, although some of Serbian people lived in that country. The most part of Croatia (earlier Serbian teritory called Zahumlje), entire Bosnia ( again Zahumlje and part of Duklja), Montenegro (long ago called Zeta and part of Duklja) have allways been Serbian teritory. Tito nad communist have created those countries ( I mean Croatia, Bosnia and Montenegro ), they have never exist before as independant.

Because some Serbs live in Austro-Hungarian Empire, that does not means that Austria was serbian country. By that, cause some of croatians lived in Zahumlje, that does not mean that that was croatian country.

Tito took serbian lands and created Bosnia, Croatia and Montenegro, and Macedonia too, as independent federal states. For you to know.

For centuries, Serbian lands ( particulary Kosovo, and later Vojvodina ) have been a wall against islam, protecting the Europe. On Kosovo battle 1389. year a.c. 20.000 serbian soldier defeated 100.000 muslimans and killed a Sultan. Europe was saved and the bells of the european churchs in Rome, Paris,Venetia, Moscow have celebrated this victory! 80 years later, Serbia was defeated and become a part of Osman Empyre, but lands of Vojvodina with Serbian knights continued the tradition. Little Sebia 1914 have defeated in 3 battles great Austrian army, when did your US Army defeated anybody who had more soldiers and wepons than you. Even in 1999 you have attacked Serbia with a help of 18 other countries. So much for yours bravery! In Bosnia also live Serbs, but muslimans. Bosnian nation does not really exist, same as American nation ( you also do not exist- you are Germans, Mexicans, Cubans, Italians, your grandparents ( or their grandparents ) came from England, Netherland, France etc.- SO WANT IT OR NOT AMERICAN NATION DO NOT EXIST! But, whatever, you have the right to hate us- thats anyway all you can do, nothing more...

How small-town of you indeed, westside...

All "small town people" must picket the Serbian

Church of Saint Sava on 25th street off 5th avenue.

It's sad for the victim and his family.

  • NannyState

Didn't you know? One guy cracks a pool cue over another guy's head or whatever, and suddenly entire nations are held to account. This was an ugly (see photo) personal mess, not a Clash of Civilizations. I hope Bryan is mending well.

    Thefacts?

What book lead you to believe that Serbia was, in 1914, part of the Austro-Hungarian empire? If you are allergic to books, use Wikipedia, gosh, you should change your nick to "the nonfactual hearsay based on misconceptual knowledge".

Gavrilo Princip was born in Bosnia, under Austrian occupation at the time (since 1878), thus an Austrian subject. Duh!

What about Saddam and this poor guy? Nothing to say on that just like anything else that is not pertaining to venting your hateful rage, right?

Ethnic cleansing is close to genocide but not quite. It was a practice that occurred throughout the former Yugoslavia on all of the sides (but as historians later realized, throughout the world, including what happened in the Americas with the Natives). In fact, the wholesale expulsion of some 200-250K Serbs from the Krajina in Operation Storm in 1995, coordinated by MPRI, a Virginia-based firm ("military contractors"), was by far the best/worst example of it.

There is no such thing as the European Court.

The Serbian Ministry of Foreing Affairs is investigating the facts pertaining to the events. In the meantime, both the consul and vice-consul have been recalled which is the most severe of diplomatic disciplinary measures. Criminal charges in Serbia, for the vice-council, if it is found that he did indeed aid in Kovacevic's fleeing, are still a possibility.

The sad part is that none of this has anything to do with poor Brian's fate, atonement, responsibility or the facts. You seem to have a grudge against a certain ethnic group that can only be resolved with professional help. Unfortunately, you are not ready for that step.

Don't spew your hate here man, if not a shrink, at least get a girlfriend, that might reduce your overbearing levels of testosterone.

    Peace out dude

  • serbian

and i forgot to wrote. Serbia WAS NEVER part of a Austro-Hungarian Empire! It allways existed as Serbia and in some period Kraljevina Srba, Hrvata i Slovenaca (Kingdom of Serb, Croatia and Slovenia)

  • serbian

Ok thefacts, you clearly know something about our history and that's nice, but unfortunally it's not true.

    1. Gavrilo Princip was member of "Mlada Bosna" (Youth Bosnia) which, is right, murder the archduke Franz Ferdinand. He did that becouse Austro-Hungarian occupy Bosnia which was serbian territory (like Kosovo now).

    2. Quote: "Or describe the picnic at the Siege of Sarajevo and Srebvinice."

Did you heard about Croatian action Oluja (Storm) when fled 200.000 Serbs from Croatia. Lora, Jasenovo, etc. it was a war and s**** are being done in both sides. Im sorry of all the peoples that was killed during that f***** war, no mether which nations they are.

    3. Quote: "How about the treatment of the Kosovans, whose crime was being born in what some call "Serbia"?"

When you talk about our history, which i'm very proud, please tell me something about Kosovski Boj (Battle of Kosovo) which happend in 1379. If you never heard about that, please read and educate yourself: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_o...

Do you know what situation is now on Kosovo. The Serbs in north cant visit familly in south, they live in the rings which is keept by UN. We will never gave up our territory. Would you gave up Florida or New York?

    4. Serbia NEVER prompted the rise of Hitler, we battle AGAINST him with Russia, France, England, USA, etc.

If you talking about my country, what the hell you think about USA. Everywhere they go, its a war. Vietnam, Iraq, Avganistan, Bosnia, Korea, Serbia, etc and its all in 60 years. Also with excusses like "War against terror", "against iraq nuklear wepons", "battle against communism",...

Knowing all of that, i hate USA besouse of they politics, but its not my judge of peoples. In this case, i'm strongly recommend that they find him and have a fair trail, also i'm, as a Serb, very sorry that guy which is in coma.

In the end ask yourself one. Would it ever be posted in new york times, washington post if situation is inverse?

    Greetings from Serbia

  • thefacts

Of course, he was an Austrian citizen. Serbia was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire!

    Duh!

So, your premise is specious and everything that follows is not credible.

Princip and his co-conspirators killed the Archduke as a blow for Serbian freedom. I called them nutty earlier because three men do not a national revolution make. They were terrorists, without a support network or popular front supporting them.

You further obfuscate by bringing in Saddam and the victim of this Serb thug.

Of course, Serbs did not patent Ethnic Cleansing. One cannot patent Genocide.

But they did practice - you must admit - widespread Genocide with ALL their neighbors after the death of Tito. The world called their behavior Ethnic Cleansing. Hitler called it the Final Solution. The European Court called it Genocide.

I'll let you call it what you want.

    I'm still waiting.

Be the Serb apologist all you want, that is your right. But don't say you guys have no atonement to make. Admission of war crimes and genocide is the first step in gaining respect from the rest of the world, which is well aware of your atrocities, no matter how much you lot deny it.

The Serb ambassador's particpation and government's collusion in this whole bar-brawl affair is indicative and repetitive of the way the Serbs have been behaving for the past hundred years with everyone who is not a Serb.

Instead of telling me to go to a psychiatrist, perhaps the Serbs should go to a confessor.

  • savindan

Archduke Franz Ferdinand was killed by Gavrilo Princip, an Austrian citizen, i.e. killed by his own subject. Your point being what, that an entire nation participated in that just because Princip happened to be of Serb extraction? If you want a definition of a Nazi, that would be pretty close.

In comparison, could we say that Saddam Hussein's WMD caused the Iraq civil war now raging? It takes more than an assassination to start a (world) war and mistaking the trigger (some might even say catalyst) for the cause is something an amateur would do, which you most certainly are not as I see you do indeed read books and feel insulted by my suggestion of Puzo-wisdom :)

Had there been no WWI, World War II would have just been called WWI and something else would have taken WWII's place. Once again, refer back to the "bad blood". War is not caused by random events but by the perfect conjuncture of circumstances favorable to it. Just like the altercation in the bar, Steinhauer groped the girl, there was alcohol, bad lighting, jealousy, sexual hormones and the lot.

Your erroneus reasoning would lead us to oversimplify the situation and conclude that Steinhauer, simply by groping the coochie-mama (I'm sorry but she caused an international shitstorm), caused the fight ergo got what he deserved - being beaten to a pulp. How unjust, wouldn't you say?

Quite frankely, it seems you have an issue with the Serbs as a nation, you probably should settle that, I would suggest a shrink. Serbs did not patent ethnic cleansing, neither the name nor the practice, once again refer to history books.

As far as the rest of your bigoted excuse for a post is concerned, just as much dirt can be dug up on any ethnic group in the world, including your own, whatever it might be. So lest you judge others, put a mirror to your own face, it seems insecurity is what drives most people to hate.

And don't forget to have a nice day :)

  • thefacts

"Serbs did not start WWI "

Who killed Franz Ferdinand, the Swiss?

Perhaps blaming Serbs for WW2 is a stretch, but if they had left Franz Ferdinand alone, would there have been WW1? Not likely. And WW1 definitely led to WW2.

And Mario Puzo is no Arnold Toynbee, so be careful what authority you quote.

But you must admit that th eSerbs did give us a nice phrase: Ethnic Cleansing. Care to define that, O Wise One?

Or describe the picnic at the Siege of Sarajevo and Srebvinice.

How about the treatment of the Kosovans, whose crime was being born in what some call "Serbia"?

Or a nation that harbors war criminal from justice for years on end.

Or an ambassador that lies to US authorities about the extradition of a fugitive from US justice.

Or the parents of the same thug who respond, (his father said), "We feel he is a victim of small-town values ganging up against a foreigner. He was targeted because he was Serb and a very large man."

The Germans have been honorable enough to atone for their 'problem'. When will the Serbs?

  • savindan

So you admit to being a Nazi then? :)

FYI Serbs did not start WWI but an intricate system of European Power's Alliances in conjunction with growing national interests apetites did.

Whatsamatta witya? Never watch the Godfather? "The accumulation of bad blood causes wars between the families every so often which in turn is purged by wars". The classics contain inumerable sources of wisdom you kids so mistakenly search for on internet forums (since books are out, right?)

And blaming Serbs for WWII is a stretch to say the least...

  • Spirit of 76

Did you really mean and want to say, "Try to convict Kovacevic in absentia."? You could "of" said it clearer.

And again all Snoopy does when he tries to be clever is show how incredibly stupid he is. Do you have any idea what it means to try somebody and then convict him? Obviously, you don't. So in the past few months, you've proven that you don't know anything about FDNY, science, grammar or the legal system, in addition to a welter of lesser topics. Do you know anything at all?

    No skin off my nose.

I am sure there are lots of Albanians or Croatian in NYC you can torture to death with their hands tied behind their back.

Hell, you can even video it and put it on youtube, like your Serbian brothers did.

    good try, but no cigar.

    bye!

I was forwarded this page from a friend, and my jaw dropped as I kept reading. My prayers go out to Steinhauer's family and I hope Bryan recovers quickly.

I was incredibly disappointed to review a lot of the commentary to follow the article. Most of the comments attacking Serbs are uneducated and insulting.

To 'thefacts': you seem to be everything but.
