New Amsterdam Public Market Gets Fresh Tomorrow

062708amsterdampublic.jpgLet’s not let the bitter turf war between the Fancy Food Show and the Unfancy Food Show eclipse the other fine food event going down this weekend. Sunday marks the third seasonal New Amsterdam Public market – the winter version was a big hit last December, drawing thousands despite a huge snowstorm. The one day-only event draws fine artisanal food vendors to the plaza fronting the New Market Building down by the South Street Seaport.

The goal of New Amsterdam Public – run by a non-profit – is to evolve into a year-round market while cultivating a community to popularize sustainable and locally sourced food. To that end, there are a lot of vendors and organizers coming to this thing Sunday – bakers, beekeepers, organic produce distributors, urban farmers, local wineries, artisanal cheese makers, local chefs like Mark Fiorentino (from Daniel), pickle companies and popsicle producers.

Peruse the vast list of edible possibilities here or just show up Sunday with your canvas bags and a wad of cash – admission is free with a $5 suggested donation. 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the plaza fronting the New Market Building by Pier 17 at the South Street Seaport.
