SciFi.com is reporting that the Cloverfield sequel is on hold until an idea as interesting as the original is thought up. This is according to director Matt Reeves, who also said, "We're still kind of toying with what it's going to be and whether or not we're going to find something that will be as exciting for us to make and, hopefully, for an audience to watch. So we'll see. It's really in the baby, baby stages. And right now it's definitely on hold until we come up with what that would be." All previous chatter has suggested a prequel, and Reeves confirms that it's under discussion. [via Pop Candy]

Yes. Because the original was so original.
My idea for a Cloverfield prequel. It's the 80s. Hair bands take over New York City. Even CBGB is infected. Stiv Bators beats them all to a pulp. NYC is saved. In the end we learn that Cloverfield is really the resurrected and confused soul of Stiv Bators.
The whole movie is shot on Pxl 2000.
Cloverfield: The better, updated version of the crappy Godzilla remake with Matthew "I can't believe I'm married to a horse" Broderick. Yeah, that's REAL original.
oh no! you mean gothamist can't whore itself out for more cloverfield money by promoting the film to death across it's pages? and here i was, looking forward to a cloverfield 2 ad on every page as well as a post roughly every other day about the upcoming movie.
