Last Night's Action: Losing to Bottom-Feeders

  • Mariners 11, Mets 0: Yes, the Mets are on the verge of being swept by the worst team in baseball. Seattle rocked Mets starter Oliver Perez for six runs in five innings and the Mets looked lost against Mariners knuckleballer R.A. Dickey. To be fair, they would look lost against a slow-pitch softball pitcher at this point. Carlos Beltran and Jerry Manuel weren't enamored with home-plate umpire Brian Runge's strike zone; they got ejected in the fourth inning for arguing balls and strikes. With David Wright on the bench, that left Jose Reyes as the only real hitter in the lineup. Brian Schneider and Fernando Tatis did have three hits apiece, however. John Maine is charged with avoiding the sweep Wednesday night.
  • Pirates 12, Yankees 5: Darrell Rasner didn't have it -- again -- and the Yankees lost to the Pirates for the first time since the 1960 World Series. Of course, the teams had only played each other six times since. Bill Mazeroski hit that infamous home run. The Yankees have no choice but to stick with Rasner, their No. 4 starter, but the righty needs to limit the home runs. He allowed two on Tuesday. Some early double plays -- one by Derek Jeter, one by Bobby Abreu -- cost the Yankees early chances against Tom Gorzelanny. LaTroy Hawkins continued to ask for his release struggle by allowing four runs in 2 2/3 innings of relief.

The problem with these teams not winning has nothing to do with the players. NO! NO! NO! It's the stadiums they are playing in. If we spend like a billion and a half to improve that situation, perhaps we can have winning teams. Just look at the Knicks and their situation.

I was at the game the umpire was looking for a fight.

Let's play: "Really?"
(with props to Seth & Amy)

Really, Mets, that's the best you can do against the worst team in the American League?

Really, Yankees, that's how you show up against a mediocre National League team?

Really, The Pittsburgh Pirates have moved up to mediocre? That's pretty good for them. (15 consecutive losing seasons, including 6 last place finishes). This year (so far) they are only 7.5 back in the while card, while the Mets are 6.

Really, The Mets still think they have a chance?

Really, Girardi expected Latroy Hawkins to pitch 3 innings?

...and by "while card" I meant "wild card".
But you knew that, right?

This is yet another time where a Met's player is dumb enough to fall for the baiting.

Plenty of great Minor League action in New York.

Is it too early to discuss firing Girardi?

This weekend we will see the Little League Playoffs between the Mets and Yankees. The winner will play a Taiwanese team of twelve year olds and probably lose.
How do you get 8 hits in a game and not score a run?
I think it's time to start trading players, lowering the payroll and try to rebuild. This superstar mentality is not doing us any good. Beltran and now Santana are not performing considering their experience and salaries. The team can be rebuilt around Reyes and Wright (who by the way are not getting paid in the dark either).
Another thing that amazes me is size of the crowds at the games they play at home and on the road but that can't last.

Wow. This Met team is horrible. They have scored 2 runs in 18 innings against the worst team in the AL. Jerry Manuel says there will be changes, but what the hell does that mean? Will he finally bench Delgado? Castillo? When Tatis, Schneider, and Anderson is your entire offense, it is time to mail in the season. Is Jeff Torborg anywhere? This team is resembling the Mets of the early 90s. Go Cyclones!

That was a pretty fucking embarrassing game by the Mets.
