After many questioned his Monday morning remarks about Dallas Cowboys cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones, radio shock jock Don Imus defended them, explaining he was being "sarcastic."
On Monday, newsreader Warner Wolf had mentioned Jones's desire to drop the Pacman nickname, hoping to drop the associations with his many legal troubles. Imus had asked Wolf, "What color is he?" to which Wolf said, "He's African-American." Then Imus said, "Well, there you go. Now we know." Many people didn't catch the sarcasm, including Jones himself, who told the Dallas Morning News, "I'm truly upset about the comments. Obviously Mr. Imus has problems with African-Americans. I'm upset, and I hope the station he works for handles it accordingly. I will pray for him."
Yesterday, Imus told listeners, "Obviously, [the police] are picking on him. So I asked Warner what color he was. Well, obviously, I already knew what color he was. What people should be outraged about is they arrest blacks for no reason. There was no reason to arrest this kid six times. Maybe he did something once, but I mean everyone does something once." He also said Jones is a lovely kid. "He was out there having fun;" and added "What people should be outraged about is that they arrest blacks for no reason, and I mean there's no reason to arrest this kid six times. They shoot blacks for no reason."
The Reverend Al Sharpton, who voiced concerns about the remarks yesterday (and whose radio show Imus appeared on after his Rutgers women's basketball remarks), said he hoped Imus meant what he said, "If now Imus is saying he's joined the ranks of those that are raising the question of racial disparity in the criminal justice system, then he's taking a correct position. I don't have any record of him saying that in the past." Still, Sharpton says he's examining the remarks.
The Lede asked a good question: "Have Americans all lost the ability to detect sarcasm?"

Snap! Maybe that's why people love LOLcats so much--you can't confuse a kitteh and an "oh. hai." with anything but cute!
>The Lede asked a good question: "Have Americans all lost the ability to detect sarcasm?"
Not the ability, but obviously permission to. This isn't the best example, but political correctness has removed our ability to laugh at ourselves, and at others. God forbid someone's feeeeeeeeelings are bruised.
nanny state thought police alert.......
Jen, the third paragraph is a complete disaster. Seeing how you've responded in the comments section I can only assume you have time to read after you write. How about a quick proof read first?
"Sharpton says he's examining the remarks." Times up Al. What is your verdict or was the sentence structure too complex?
If AA dudes want to have a "knickname" like Frank "Frankie scars" Giabanonne then let it be. Just ask Fitty, or puff asshole or what ever he is going by now, and the other eight million jerks out there trying emulate the scumbags.
For Imus to engage in racial sarcasm, on the air, after all he has recently been through, is just plain stupid.
I don't listen to the guy, so to me, he is totally irrelevant, except when I see him in the news for stupid shite like this.
He claims he was defending poor Adam Jones, who gets persecuted by "the man" because he's black?
Puh-leeze!
Imus says:
"What people should be outraged about is they arrest blacks for no reason. There was no reason to arrest this kid six times. Maybe he did something once, but I mean everyone does something once."
Let's break it down:
- "they arrest blacks for no reason"
Yes, people should be outraged if that happens.
- "there was no reason to arrest this kid six times". Um, check the record. There seems to be probable cause. Imus obviously didn't know any facts before he shot his mouth off (yet again).
Let's just ignore this guy. He's done!
Now he's practically begging. Will somebody please step forward and put a bullet in this staggering wreck?
Imus looks like an old woman.
And Bulbous Al is too busy examining his own tax returns--that is, when he's not busy eating or learning to ride a bicycle.
...have Americans lost the ability to detect sarcasm?
Nooooo, not at all...
I've always been a Don fan, been listening to Imus since the sixth grade (that's '75, folks), but he's all over the map on this one. I'm not sure if I wanted to make a case for racial issues in the justice system I'm going to use Pacman Jones as my Exhibit A.
I hate Don Imus, but it was pretty obvious to me he was commenting on the fact that the guy was being harassed due to the color of his skin. Duh.
Since when did this A**hole Al Sharpton get elected to judge anyone's remarks? This guy is such a sham and opportunist. I honestly can't stand him!! He tries to be the moral judge to anyone who tries to express an opinion that is racial. Let’s face it America, most of us are prejudice in one way or another. This is the way it is and I imagine always will be. Get over it!! I say lets look into Al’s private world and see what skeletons we find hiding in there. I bet the closet is sooo full that we won’t be able to get the door shut again.
Political correctness is such crap. Too many sensitive people in the world today. What ever happened to sticks and stones?? Get some thick skin folks. The only power words have is the power you give to them.
Whatever he meant, the fact remains that he should've known better, considering his recent "problems". He should know people (crazy or no) would be ready to jump on anything that could possibly be seen as controversial that he says.
Sarcasm requires context which Imus has no sense of: he just keeps sounding like a racist douche.
Where's Al Sharpton? Oh wait....
I think we have a keen ability to detect bullshit.
At least he didn't call him "boy".
somehow I'm even more bothered by the supposed conversion of Imus from one extreme-- an old racist-- to the other-- a person who is claiming that a privileged athlete has been arrested six times simply because he's black. Either way, it's prejudice.
Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.
wait. this dude is a liberal democrat? WTF? What's the difference between him and limbaugh? 100 pounds.
