Mets Owner Publicly Supports His General Manager

2007_06_wilponminaya.jpgFred Wilpon has come out and publicly endorsed his GM Omar Minaya and defended the handling of Willie Randolph’s dismissal. “I think Omar has done a great job,” Wilpon told reporters Monday at MLB headquarters while also explaining the thought process behind Randolph’s termination saying it was handled the way it was out of respect for Willie.

"You can always look over your shoulder and think things like that, but the intent here clearly was to respect Willie. To do it in person. It's never easy to fire anybody. Omar took a lot of time. We took a lot of time listening to him and thinking about it. He wanted to respect Willie, and that's what he did."
Willie Randolph certainly didn’t seem to see it that way when he spoke with the Daily News last week and while Wilpon spoke about respecting the manager, he did add a couple of parting shots:
"It's all a matter of performance. Recognize, Omar gave Willie a chance to be in this position. He had never been a manager in the major leagues or minor leagues. I think Willie did a good job. The results of the last say 14 months were not up to what we thought it had to be."
But, it is clear that Wilpon is firmly behind his GM, adding that, “Omar does a great job” and “Everyone who makes decisions isn't going to make all right decisions." It all sounds great, but will those endorsements still be as strong if Wilpon watches his team miss the playoffs again this season?

Fred Wilpon is in dream land now.

Great decision to fire the manager on the West Coast in the middle of the night. Keep dreaming Wilpon and watch the team miss the playoffs.

I believe Fred Wilpon is the reincarnation of Henry VIII and Omar Minaya is the reincarnation of either Thomas More or Thomas Cromwell. Both gentlemen were beheaded by their loving, gentle Sovereign Lord.

Omar, those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

Two total pieces of shit. I hope the Mets end up in the cellar.

Oh for the love of god, who the fuck cares that it was in the middle of the night? How is the significance of that in any way comparable to the significance of Willie's utter failure down the stretch last year?

Fred Wilpon never misses an opportunity to reassert his complete and utter stupidity. He should wed Hank Steinbrenner in California the next time he goes out there to fire his staff.
