Bus Vs. Building on Canal Street, 1 Dead

2008_06_buscrash.jpg

A bus crashed into a building, possibly a bank, near Canal and Bowery in Chinatown. Apparently a dump truck first hit the bus, which caused the bus driver to lose control and swerve into the building. Three people on the private bus were injured, as one person from the dump truck, and WNBC says a pedestrian was hit. One victim was reportedly in traumatic arrest. A reader points out that the Fung Wah bus stop is near that corner, though what kind of bus was involved in the accident hasn't been revealed.

Update: Now the City's OEM notification system says of the accident, "there may be traffic impacts throughout the area. Avoid the area if possible."

Update 2: WCBS 2 says it was a Fung Wah bus that crashed into 77 Bowery and one woman is dead. WNBC now has images (including above).

Update 3: WCBS880 has more details, plus this photograph (above): The truck had hit a bus that was waiting to pick up passengers. The fatality was a 57-year-old pedestrian. Also, a traffic light was taken out during the crash. WNBC says the truck had been "moving too fast" off the Manhattan Bridge exit ramp--not a shock, because vehicles do seem to fly off the bridges, but still very aggravating to hear about.

hope that dump truck got insurance. buses generally carry alot of people and americans are sue happy.

Running down the elderly, people in crosswalks, and jaywalkers has simply become too easy; total amateur hour. You've got no street credibility unless you are jumping the curb and hitting at least two people.

"Americans are sue happy"?

Um, yes, well I would think the relatives of the woman run over and killed because of someone else's recklessness might be entitled to a lawsuit.

"[W]hat kind of bus was involved in the accident hasn't been revealed"....um, isn't it "revealed" by the fact that the bus has "FUNG WAH BUS" written in giant letter across the side?

Fung Wah type busses sell rides to DC, Boston and all casinos in between for very little money. The Chinese that are not big gamblers go to see their relatives.

Fung Wah also serves a lot of college students or equally broke people shuttling between Boston, NYC, and DC.

Another auto incident??
what's the tally this week?

another casualty of the building boom.

Where's Al Sharpton?

so then, lemme get this straight:

we used to have to be careful CROSSING the street. Then SIDEWALKS became trecherous, what with cars and taxis running up onto the curb on a regular basis. Now BEING INSIDE a building can be a problem.

wtf

the where's al sharpton posts are getting old. come up with something new

hey, we just want to give the people what they want.
I'll be posting "where's al sharpton" in every post whether it's related to the Reverend or not.

lol. chinese people don't sue. they just hope.

This proves that Chinatown has bad 'Fung Wah'.

The reval had a nooner with me today. After that he went to shine some shoes.
