Coney Island Mermaid Parade '08

Photo, by joe holmes at flickr

By all accounts, it seems like Saturday's Mermaid Parade was a great deal of fun, enjoying perfect weather and drawing large crowds. One can only hope that the Coney Island tradition dating back to 1903 remains as popular in coming years. Thanks to everyone who tagged and/or submitted their photos "gothamist."

Update: We've added more pictures to the gallery!

Why are there only 19 photos in this gallery. I'm certain a whole lot more were submitted. I have over 40 photos of this event.

What gives here. Usually this site is pretty up to date and good at refreshing new contributions.

xenop is everything wrong with the new breed of New York City. Go back to the midwest.

  • kingstonlounge

The parade was a blast, especially the beautiful freaks, trannies, and lunatics.

I have some photos up on my blog: Click here

Here's hoping that Joe Sitt never gets a chance to ruin the neighborhood, and that there are Mermaid Parades for decades to come.

the trannies are alright but some of them are just way too attention whore-ish. I saw this awesome school marching band trying to do their thing but this super tranny came in dressed in a g-string and a fish net with a paris hilton wig and started to dance flamboyantly between the marching band lines and through the whole thing and around trying to steal the marching band's thunder and trying to distract the band and the crowd. It was just awful!

    xenop,

Thank god you've come here and told us all about the "trannies." Are you going to report about all the gays at the pride parade too? Sheesh! This is New York! You sound like one of my fourteen year old male students, so insecure and afraid of being called "gay" that you go around acusing all the other kids of being "fags".

Grow up, relax, and stop blaming transpeople just because you had to walk around with your tail between your legs after your out of town guests (who somehow are even more close-minded than you) didn't like the parade.

What's amazing about this event is how people from all over the city (and beyond) attend, and for all different reasons. What's annoying is if some drunk, creepy old guy keeps yelling "show us some titties" at everyone who walks by, paying no mind to the kids sitting near him.

The wholesome bits are fun, but it is quite a lot of freaks, trannies, and lunatics. Some out of towners were fooled by the internet hype and so I took them to it, and I've never been more embarrassed in my life. I dunno, wasn't Disney supposed to bulldoze the whole damn thing and turn it into something worth visiting? Its just full up of ghetto projects, seedy russian drug addicts, and the other loonies that climbed out of the primordial ooze to accost people along the boardwalk. And the people dancing? there were quite a lot of hipsters who I know don't live in Coney Island, despite their pleas to save it from the "developers." The painted and bare breasts were nice, but again, there were trannies.

The one with the starfish on her tits looks like Grandpa Munster.

It's not yet a crime to be silly and enjoy yourself in NYC.

  • BongoBoy

There are some people who must use foundation garments at all times. Many of them were in these and other pictures of yesterday's events.

Guess this was the white folks Puerto Rican Day parade.Muffin-top central.

    Truly a freak show.

I have great memories of the Mermaid Parade in the mid-late 90's. Going again last year, it was just as fun.

Really, people, get over yourselves. If you don't like it don't go.

How many words per minute can the dude with the parrot type? I'm looking for typist/receptionist for my law firm.

  • fakenewyorker

    the mermaid parade predated hipsters

  • babyhitler

#1- it's more like hipsters and trannies.

  • rikomatic

What a glorious day at the parade. It just keeps getting bigger and better every year.

Here's some video of my group the Brooklyn Bombshell Revue performing at the judges stand

I second that - thank you to those that have posted and shared their images - I love them :-)

    Great job to you all!
