[1] Read the article. The driver didn't care about such laws. He didn't have any kind of license! Car use in the city is for the most part discretionary. Only a minority really, desperately need a car. But people will never give them up. We need $10 per gallon gas.

How about we starting treating driving and the ownership of vehicles a little more seriously than mere extensions of our genitalia or fashion accessories? People (and by that I mean "Americans") seem to think of driving as a right rather than a privilege and seem to think of the road as a huge video game. Perhaps Mr. Grant was surprised that he could not just go back to the last save point and have a do-over.

In NYC you need to be 17 to drive alone. At 16 you need to be with your parent or guardian (who's a minimum of 21 with a valid license for that vehicle) and the vehicle must have dual brakes. http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/broch/c41.htm
