If this city had any vision, the old stadium could be torn down and replaced by something special. Baltimore and Chicago's Wrigley have bars and clubs worth going to all year round. This could mean jobs for the locals and cheap fun for all New Yorkers. Or the space could be shared with the community to make up for the lost parkspace for the new stadium (indoor pool? children's health center?). But, I live in NYC and after over 30 years we don't know what to do with the area around Shea nor do we have clue about what to do with Governors Island.

On a related subject - has the idea of building residential units around the remains of old Yankee Stadium been broached? Just this kind of thing was done with the old Arsenal soccer stadium in England. This excerpt from the book Conceptions of the Desirable What Cities Ought to Know about the Future: "In the summer of 2006, the venerable Arsenal Football Club moved out of its old home, the august Highbury Stadium, and into the larger Emirates Stadium, scarcely five minutes away on foot. Left behind was an empty stadium full of precious emotions and memories of all those great victories, unforgettable goals, and bitter defeats. To tear down the stadium they had begun using in 1913 would thus have been unthinkable. And so the idea was hatched to play Highbury in a new way, to transform it into a residential area. The walls were left standing and the stands are being rebuilt, turned into luxury apartments and lofts. Where, over the decades, twenty-two players tore after the ball, in future the residents will be able to sit on the benches in the park designed by landscape architect Christopher Bradley-Hole. The lion’s share of apartments was sold before the planning phase was even completed." If have little doubt that, if done with care, these too would be very popular.

Steinbrenner is laughing all the way to his grave. Steinbrenner fils are laughing all the way to the bank. Tickets at the new Yankee Stadium will be outrageously expensive. Just can't wait to see what the $8.50 per cup of "beer" that's actually foamy water goes for.
