Weather on Hold

Today is Heat Awareness Day. Luckily there is no excessive heat in the Big Apple to be aware of today. Morning sun should give way to afternoon clouds and the high will be 75 at best. There's a non-negligible chance of a shower or thunderstorm this afternoon and evening.

With a stubborn upper-level low that's not showing any sign of movement, this week's weather will be in a remarkably holding pattern. Seasonable temperatures with a slight chance of showers in the afternoon and evening are expected through Monday. The big difference from now until then will be a gradual warming. By Saturday the high will be in the low 80s, perfect for the Mermaid Parade. Druids take note: the summer solstice occurs at 7:59 p.m. EDT on Friday.

While the skies looked really ominous Monday evening, the storm's impact on the city was minimal. There were some strong winds, but less than a quarter inch of rain fell in Central Park. The Weather Service has confirmed that the same squall line did produce a minimal tornado that briefly touched down three times in Newburgh. The storm knocked out power to 28,000 homes in the Hudson Valley. The Newburgh Record has a slideshow of reader photos of the storm and damage for those of you into weather pr0n.
