Red Hook Ikea Waterfront Esplanade Fully Assembled

Six of the twenty-two acres of land that Ikea occupies in Red Hook have been turned into a park and waterfront esplanade, built by the big box retailer as a deal-sweetener for their wary neighbors. You don’t need to buy any Swedish meatballs to hang out by the water, and the free Water Taxi service arranged by Ikea might make it an appealing weekend destination in its own right.

But shoppers should be aware that there’s a limit to how much the Water Taxi will let you schlep back to Manhattan: Signage photographed below reveals that Water Taxi will be limiting riders to what they can fit in one bag. And that’s where the Ikea delivery $ervice comes in!

While part of this is to be able to gouge people w delivery charges, another part is simple safety and liability. You let people lug furniture onto a boat and eventually someone's going to have a KLUBBO fall on their head.

there are way too many ikea stories on here today.

consolidation, anyone?

Be strong. I'm sure the two (2) Ikea stories on Gothamist today won't do serious harm to anyone.

i don't know. certainly could do as much harm as comments about it.

IKEA must have missed the memo that you don't *actually* have to build the park that you promised.

I'll go eat my pupusas in that park... soon, hopefully....

Do they give you those blue bags for free with a sufficiently large order or do they charge you for them?

I used to shoot up in their parking lot in Elizabeth. Now they go and build a nice esplanade for me and my friends. IKEA rocks!
