Covered: NY Mets' Firing of Willie Randolph

Today's front covers of the Daily News, Post and Newsday

The local papers have weighed in and made the Mets' firing of manager Willie Randolph their number 1, 2 and 3 topics. Angry over how Randolph was fired (flying him all the way out to Los Angeles?!? And Omar Minaya claiming that the media speculation pushed him to fire Randolph?), yes, but the tabloids were probably angry over something else: The fact that the firing took place around midnight PST/3 a.m. EST, which meant it was too late to get into yesterday papers!

Therefore, today is all about the Mets. The Daily News goes for a Randolph cover, Newsday opts for Minaya, and the Post brings out the sad Mr. Met. Good one, Mets organization--think of all the little kids who will see the Post cover and wonder why Mr. Met is so upset!

Is it me or does the Post cover sort of look like a LOLCAT?

The Yankees should fire Joe Girardi and bring Willie in.
LOL... please do. He'll probably do a little better because managing in the AL is like Managing For Dummies, but you'll recognize his failings soon enough.

why would the yankees want to bring someone closer to joe torre when it's clear that's not the direction they want to go in anymore?

its only june and i dont see the yankees in any issue right now. 5.5 games from first..and they have the best winning record in baseball. 5 straight and like 13-2 of the last 15? i may be wrong with the last 15 but not completely off. its def 8-2 of the last 10.

A person like willie or joe torre is better for veteran teams ie.. late 90's yankees.. not the yankees of 2008 and CLEARLY not for the mets and their undisciplined antics. Plus Willie started digging his own grave.. you can't start crying racism to the media thinking it's off the record, when you're in New York, the most culturally diverse city in the entire US. I'm sure the yankees management would LOVE that kind of manager to join the organization. /sarcasm

anyway..back to the story. While it was pretty slimy the way the Mess Management handled the firing, it was inevitable.

My fav cover was the NY post.. Meet The Mess

The Yankees should fire Joe Girardi and bring Willie in. Hell, Joe has a better team then Willie had and look at the record. Joe ain't doing a great job himself. Willie is closer to being a Joe Torre then Joe Girardi is.

The fact that the firing took place around midnight PST/3 a.m. EST, which meant it was too late to get into yesterday papers!

The front office of the Mets needs a lesson in New York Press 101. Trying to weasel out of the front page by doing it at 3am has only blown this thing up way more than it would have been if they let Willie go in a respectable way.

This whole charade has made the management of the Yankees look like saints in comparison.

As a Yankee fan, I always thought George S. was mostly a jerk, and Fred Wilpon was a decent fellow.

But one thing's for sure... leave the business to the sons and all they will do is screw it up.

Clearly Minaya lacks class and tact. What a slimy way to handle firing anyone.
