Please, this looks like Martha Stewart was part of the design team. What were they thinking? There is no way a tenement ever looked this during the time period—it's too organized and la di da decorated; and it's wind swept clean. Totally removed from reality I should know as I live in a basically untouched tenement apartment circa 1880 in the West Village. Shit, I still have gas light fixtures.

I totally went on that tour back in 8th grade. Very interesting, I highly recommend it. Maybe I'll go again now it's all snazzed up.

You also must remember that these were not "one man's studio apartment." there were familys of up to 8 or more in each little dungshack

People That's because your apartments were Tenements! Unless its new construction (as in last 30 years) If you live in the LES East Village or North Brooklyn YOU LIVE IN A TENEMENT BUILDING! They just charged you thousands of dollars because they can. a Free Market does a slumlord good

Is it weird that I think that apartment looks spacious and beautiful. I guess one man's tenement is another man's studio apartment.
