OTB Saved, But Bloomberg-Paterson Fight Brews
A last-minute deal was worked out between Governor David Paterson and Mayor Michael Bloomberg to save Off-track Betting, but the road to the agreement was rocky.
Bloomberg had been unhappy with how OTB provides money for the state but the city ends up subsidizing it, thanks to a formula that gives the state a cut of revenues (not profit). According to the NY Times, the city will now "earn some $4 million from the winning-bets surcharge and $3.25 million more annually as part of a three-year agreement that lets OTB air its races on two city television channels" while the state will "assume all financial responsibilities for the operation through a public benefit corporation."
The Daily News characterizes the dealings as being "Fueled by ego, turf wars and good old-fashioned screw-you politics" with people acting in "typical pass-the-buck style." And the Post reports that Paterson called Bloomberg a liar to others and here are some quotes from someone with "firsthand knowledge of Paterson's comments" on the mayor:
- "He has the same kind of anger that reminds you of Spitzer. I think he's starting to be concerned that he can't get anything done"
- "He appears to be self-destructing"
- "Eliot Spitzer's tantrums were bizarre because you never knew when they were coming or why, whether it was contrived or whether he was a psycho"
- "It's obvious that Bloomberg has little use for the kind of people who come from Queens and Staten Island, so how is he going to approach the people of Oswego and Lewis counties and Buffalo?"
- "The people of New York City may be OK with the mayor taking off and flying to his private home in Bermuda every weekend, but if he did that at the state level, I think the people would send him a different message."
Update: Paterson denies making any of the statements printed in today's Post. WCBS 880 has footage of Paterson discussing the quotes, how he feels about Mayor Bloomberg, and why he's not going to demand a retraction.
Paterson added he spoke to Bloomberg this morning--the Mayor did not believe the Post story--and emphasized how he and Bloomberg have a good relationship, in spite of disagreements.

Could this be preemptive mudslinging in case Bloomberg runs for governor?

Bloomberg for Governor! Too bad he couldn't figure out a way to get congestion pricing through in exchange for keeping OTB going.

Bloomberg's tantrums in making a city for the rich seems to me to be his greatest fete, maybe some should start to question his management style, like the Mr Paterson...doing his job?
But like myself, those who have kind words for the current mayor, may more then likely are those who are not of the city's working class, but they show a facade of your "every day".
Pay up, the percentage of taxes paid by the working class is not something of concern for the rich...the last time they tried for a guilded age, the blowback was the great depression and the socialization of the United States...
What work were public project for public use. Not private profit.
What exactly has Bloomberg done for NYC?
Has anyone ecen questioned development at the WTC site?
The education Mayor who has seen dropout rates soar?
The enviormental Mayor but Astro Turfs vast swaths of Park Land bcause it is cheaper?
Privatizes public green space for preffered citizens?
Suing and Fighting Gay marraige?
Affordable Housing Crisis?
Highest Tax rates for Businesses and Income in the country?
Lowest civil service pay rates of any major US City? (teachers, Police, Firemen)
NYC's own little guantanamo on the West Side for the RNC?
What exactly?

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who finds the mayor incredibly spoiled for flying to Bermuda every weekend. If he really cared about the city, wouldn't he be staying here a little more? Perhaps see a Broadway show every once in a while? And any gains made by his "Green NYC" program are quickly annihilated by the fumes of his private jet speeding away.

What exactly is the source for Dicker's story? That's what I want to know. He plays it very shady yet has a tremendous number of very precise quotes from the governor's supposedly private conversations.

I hope that all of what Patterson said is true -- it will finally show someone in charge in Albany with sensibility AND balls.
Bloomberg has managed not to mess the city up a la Dinkins. That's about all he's done that is positive. He needs to head out to Bermuda/London/Westchester for good once his term is up, and stick to being a tourist here.

I think Bloomberg is a good mayor. You guys don't have to like him, I do. =)
