Why not close the island off to cars permanently? Why the half-step? If the mayor is so against anyone driving in Manhattan, close it off completely...and take the economic consequences.

I like it. One of my favorite memories is the evening of July 4, 1986, when they closed lower Manhattan to all cars. People were all over the streets on their way to Battery Park to see the fireworks. Wish it wasn't in the heat of summer, though. They should extend it to Labor Day. Aren't an awful lot of people out of town on Labor Day anyway? Nobody would notice the closed avenues.

Please, if people are "stuck" after 1 p.m. they can walk or ride from Park Ave to the bike paths on either the east or west sides and ride from there. This notion that New Yorkers are fragile babies is hard to swallow.

Good first step. What about those people that ride their bike downtown, and get stuck there after the 1 o'clock closing? Not everyone wants to ride back in traffic. Families with kids. This condition will reduce use.

They close Ave. Atlantica in Rio along Ipanema and Copacobana beaches all day on Sundays and there is no shortage of foot traffic. It actually encourages foot traffic. It's a good idea, but it should be extended past 1pm.
