Openings Roundup: Shalizar, Matsugen, Mad 46

061308shalizar.jpgShalizar: Bangladesh native Parvez Eliaas and his Iranian partner Kaz Bayati have just opened their second Persian restaurant on the Upper East Side, not far from their original venture, Persepolis. According to Thrillist, the new bistro is distinguished by exposed brick and a spacious bar, where old world wines, pomegranate cocktails and wild berry-infused vodkas can be savored. The Middle Eastern menu includes delicacies like baby lamb stew and salmon kebab. 1420 Third Avenue near 80th Street, (212) 288-0012

Matsugen:
Jean-Georges Vongerichten is kind of a big deal in the restaurant industry, but he’s been keeping a lower profile in New York lately. Nevertheless, his minions have been busy remaking his former Tribeca restaurant, 66, into a fancy-pants Japanese soba house. Urban Daddy has it that the noodles are hand-rolled in the back room, while a big aquarium affords a murky view into the kitchen. Further details on the very recently opened establishment remain elusive, as the publicist tells Eater we “made a conscious decision to keep the restaurant opening low-key.” 241 Church Street, (212) 925-0202

Mad 46:
If you’re stuck in midtown and desperate for a little air, the location of this new rooftop lounge in the Roosevelt Hotel is easy to remember: Mad 46 = Madison at 46th Street. The press release promises that the place is “urbane without being absurd,” with western views, specialty (read: expensive) cocktails, and eats downstairs at the Roosevelt Grill. Just so you know what you’re in for, Zagat Buzz promises “waitresses in itty-bitty black dresses.” Also, it seems it’s only open Monday through Thursday from 5 p.m. to midnight and Fridays from 3 p.m to midnight. Saturday and Sunday are for private parties or receptions. 5 East 45th Street, entrance on 46th Street, (212) 885-6095.
