COMEDY: Tonight begins the 4th annual Sketchfest NYC, "dedicated to promoting the art of sketch comedy," which, they explain, "is different from improv and stand-up, [it] consists of short written scenes, rehearsed beforehand usually presented by a group of people" (as if you didn't know). All shows will be taking place at the UCB Theater; get the full schedule here -- The Harvard Sailing Team (pictured) kicks it all off at 7 p.m.
7 p.m. // UCB Theater [26th Street and 8th Ave] // $10 per show; $40 to $100 for passes
MUSIC: Isaac Hayes delivers his funky soulful tunes tonight at a free Prospect Park show. The Scientologist famously quit South Park after their Tom Cruise episode; so while you may not hear "Chocolate Salty Balls," maybe he'll play a song or two off of his 2001 album "The Joy Of Creating - The Golden Era Musicians And Friends Play L. Ron Hubbard." (Seriously, that's real.)
8 p.m. // Prospect Park Bandshell [9th St and Prospect Park, Brooklyn] // Free
If you're looking for something a little different, tonight NYC Popfest kicks off four days of live performances at Cake Shop. Love Is All, The Secret History, Oh! Custer, In Interview and The Foxgloves will fill out the bill. Get more info on the fest, with full lineup details for all four days, here.
8 p.m. // Cake Shop [152 Ludlow St] // $10, RSVP to ensure entry
THEATER: What good is posthumous acclaim if you’re not alive to savor it? In Carl Djerassi's comedy Three on a Couch, an author and megalomaniac named "Marx" isn’t satisfied with the idea that he’ll be adored once he dies, so he hatches a plan to fake his own death and enjoy his deserved fame while still among the living. Only his therapist knows his scheme, which is thrown into jeopardy when Marx’s grieving widow starts getting nosy. The production mixes film noir, commedia dell'arte, and broad farce into what reviewer Peter Schuyler calls “a hilarious cocktail of theatre… and one of the funnier [comedies] I've seen on stage in a long time.” – John Del Signore
8 p.m. // Soho Playhouse [15 Vandam Street] // Ticket prices vary.
EVENT: Burgeoning taxidermists can hone their skills tonight at another group taxidermy practice. "Rogue Taxidermy is outlaw taxidermy that does not follow the rules of traditional taxidermy. Come see for yourself tonight when we create a rather messy collage of Chinatown fish and other animal parts in Chinatown. You are also encouraged to participate and bring your own animals if you wish. Free latex gloves are provided. Rain or shine." Yeah, it's pretty gross, but to each their own.
9 p.m. // Southeast Corner of Canal St and Lafayette St // Free
