NYC: Food Center of the Universe?
Some of us might think that New York is the center of the world for many things, including food. The point is debatable, but at least for a few nights a year, it will be.
Lee Schrager, the mastermind behind the South Beach Wine & Food Festival, is putting together the first ever New York City Wine & Food Festival from October 9 - 12. And given what he's done with South Beach, it will be a big deal.
Schrager was profiled in this week's Times dining section, which praised how he "in seven years transformed what was originally a one-day wine tasting event on the campus of Florida International University for a few hundred people into a four-day extravaganza on the sand attracting tens of thousands of visitors, and, this year, a live broadcast on the 'Today' show." Impressive, but how is it possible that NYC will be overrun with even more foodies?
The Big Apple's festival already has a solid headstart, with food, wine, spirits, glamour, glitz and big name chefs galore -- el Bulli's Ferran Adria is on board, as are Alain Ducasse, Alice Waters, and many of the Food Network's hosts. According to the PR Team, other highlights include “Rachael Ray Burger Bash," which will take place in DUMBO and have restaurants competing for the title of “Best Burger” and “SWEET”, "a late night dessert, chocolate and cheese party by some of the biggest name in pastry arts." There's also "Meatpacking Uncorked," a neighborhood block party, a Grand Tasting at Pier 54, and culinary demonstrations, wine seminars, and book signings throughout the weekend.

A lot of cities in the world have far more things comparing to nyc but most of them are unacknowledged. Claiming nyc is the food center of the universe is just plain arrogant.
but i must admit nyc is certainly unique.

I think New Yorkers would envy (yes envy!) the Tokyo mass transit system once they see it first hand.
The city is huge with several midtown looking districts, Shinjuku train station rush hour makes New York rush hour small in comparison.
New York needs to catch up, 'cause it's way behind many Asian cities.

Oh yea, Mumbai is a cesspool, when I think of cool Asian cities I think of Tokyo, Hong Kong, Seoul and Singapore.
