Family members mourning the death of a 3-year-old child at the hands of a family friend who was caring for him are speaking out, including the child's mother.
Kyle Smith died last Friday, with extensive injuries including broken bones, cigarettes burns all over his body, and tearing from sexual abuse. His godmother Nymeem Cheatham and her boyfriend Lemar Martin admitted to beating the child and were arrested and are being held without bail.
Kyle's mother Eugenia Holmes, spoke to WABC 7's Jim Hoffer, explaining how she gave Kyle to Cheatham as she tried to get over her drug addiction:
Holmes: "It wasn't like there was other people offering to help, and I just decided I'm going to give him to her."
Hoffer: "You thought you could trust her?"
Holmes: "Yeah, this was someone I knew for years. It wasn't like she came out of the blue and this was someone that I had moved back to New York and recently came in contact with."
Holmes added she knew Cheatham loved Kyle and didn't realize Cheatham's own biological children had been taken away from her in Texas. And when asked if she blames herself for her son's death, Holmes, who has since cleaned up and works as a restaurant manager in South Carolina, "Yeah, I blame myself sometimes for not being strong enough to do it. We all played a part in not caring for him at one point or another and not supporting him."
Kyle's maternal grandmother Beverly Creighton railed against Cheatham in an interview with WCBS 2, "She had no right to do it to my grandson. I will kill her right there in the courtroom!" And Kyle's paternal grandmother Norma Acosta said Cheatham never seemed to understand the arrangement was temporary.
The child's father Elliot Smith says he tried to get custody of Kyle, but he went to court without a lawyer and felt overwhelmed. Smith already cares for his and Holmes' other son, a 6-year-old, and said he told him about Kyle's death two days ago, "I had to break it to him. I told him as much as I could to comfort him."

It'd be best if Cheatham and Martin demanded they themselves be sentenced to death, or just killed themselves outright. Life for them in jail will hopefully be a living hell.
If she was cleaned up and working, why in hell didn't she get him back from her? Did she not even see her son on a regular basis?
As I said before, the minute Kyle Smith was born, he never stood a chance in this world.
Tie her tubes!
ugh, poor little guy.
This story gets worse and worse.
AND THAT'S WHY PEOPLE SHOULDN'T PROCREATE!!
AND INCREDIBLE AMOUNT OU FUCKERS ARE JUST HAVING BABIES BECAUSE THEY CAN.
They're all responsible in one way or another. The mother, the father, the two crazies who wound up sexually abusing and killing him, the grandmothers, they're all guilty.
I couldn't agree with you guys anymore. She handed this kid off like he was a dog. Argh! The whole story is despicable.
Obviously, the mother had no interest in this poor little boy just as she had no interest in custody of her other child. The only thing she is right about is that they all failed him.
So sad.
Fact: Addicts don't give two shits about anybody but themselves. If their kid has to be tortured to death so they can get high... well, that's the way the cookie crumbles.
Addicts can sometimes fake remorse (badly, like this piece of excrement does), if they think it's gonna get them something. But they feel no pity for anyone but themselves.
That's why I'm all for abortion...
This is another reason Sharpton and his cronies need to target the communities within... Start from the inside out. Not the outside in...
Those two shouldn't be held without bail, they should be held without oxygen.
The Daily News article says that the mother recently remarried in SC and was planning to get the son back. No idea if that's true, but that's what she claims anyway.
While she's no saint, part of me thinks that the mother has some decency in her if she recognized that she couldn't care for her son and tried to put him some place that would. She just chose really, really poorly.
I'm wondering about the godmother selection. The victim was 3 years old. A godparent is usually a very close friend.
How could the mother not know anything about chosen godmother's lost of all her children in Texas for abuse? Did she know the chosen godmother had kids and if so, why would she trust her little boy to some woman who doesn't have their own children around(Very rarely do women lose child custody)? Or if the father chose the godmother, shouldn't he be aware of this?
