THEATER: Orson Welles’s 1942 film adaptation of The Magnificent Ambersons was famously screwed by the studio, RKO, who took out 40 minutes against Welles's wishes and slapped on a happier ending. The negatives of that extra footage were later destroyed, but a written transcript of Welles’s intentions for the film survived. Enter tireless theatrical impresario Ian W. Hill, who’s now “reconstructed” the uncompromised version on stage at the Brick Theater as part of their ongoing Film Festival: A Theatre Festival. Martin Denton calls the show “extraordinary and riveting… there's nothing remotely like it on stage anywhere else in NYC and very likely there never will be.” [Ends Thursday.] – John Del Signore
