Saving his team plenty of uncertainty and resulting annoyance, Michael Strahan reportedly announced his retirement Monday. That means the team and the media are saved another dance in which the player hems and haws as he tries to avoid training camp while still collecting a high salary. Now, the Giants will move on with their talented and deep defensive line, anchored by Osi Umenyiora, and will avoid a major distraction when the team reports in July.
Strahan will be missed, but the Giants' attention to their defensive front four will make his absence less keen. Umenyiora and Justin Tuck make for a solid set of bookends. Strahan's career will be remembered for his pass-rushing prowess. The future Hall of Famer holds the franchise record for career sacks (Lawrence Taylor began his career before sacks were officially charted) and the NFL single-season record for sacks. Of course, the single season record is a little blemished because Green Bay quarterback Brett Favre handed it to him by going down on purpose. All in all, though, Strahan put enough quarterbacks on the ground on his own.

Being able to go out on top is a rare, rare thing.
Sad to see him go. I hope he shoves that ring in Tiki's face in the broadcast studio. And then Tiki gets fired because Tiki is a complete bore. The single season sack record should have an asterisk.
I had figured he would have gone in for at least one more just to refill the coffers after his divorce. At any rate, I feel good for him. I still remember the play where he recovered a fumble in the SB vs. Baltimore and ran it all the way back for a TD only the play had been blown dead and everyone knew it but him. Going out like this is so much better.
He is one of my favorite players and seems like a nice person too will be sad to see him go but this guy has TV work lined up.
Good guy and great player. I'm hoping his retirement sticks and he doesn't try a (lackluster) comeback like some of his contemporaries.
Lawrence Taylor is spelled with a W, not a U.
Good for him. I would have been quite surprised if he had come back for another year which very well could have resulted with his career ending with an injury. He gave everything he had to the Giants for 15 years and he deserves all the accolades and the big diamond ring. And in five years he'll also have an induction ceremony in Canton. And sometime before that he might also have a retirement ceremony for his #92, but that's up to the Giants.
This moves Justin Tuck into the lineup full-time at LDE, which is not much of a performance dropoff from Strahan. What they will miss is his leadership, of course, and the ability to rush Strahan and Tuck together on obvious passing downs.

Boorstein needs to turn in his NY Sports license.

That's nothing. In my hometown newspaper, they once ran a story about the Great One, and spelled his name Gretsky throughout even though there was a picture of him, his back towards the camera, wearing a New York Rangers jersey with the correct spelling accompanying the article.
