Gothamist Attacks the 6th Annual Big Apple Barbecue Block Party

New Yorkers love their barbecue, and they're certainly not going to let a little near-record-breaking heat get between them and their meat. Throngs of sweaty 'cue lovers waited in line at the sixth annual Big Apple Barbecue Block Party to get a taste of dishes served up by award-winning pitmasters from across the country including brisket, sausage and coleslaw from The Salt Lick BBQ in Driftwood, Texas; pulled pork shoulder from Big Bob Gibson Bar-B-Q in Decatur, Alabama; and whole hog and coleslaw from Ed Mitchell's The Pit in Raleigh, North Carolina.

New York was well represented, with Hill Country, Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, Rack & Soul, and Blue Smoke all showing off their urban barbecue chops and certainly holding their own alongside more traditional barbecue locales. Ken Callaghan's Kansas City Ribs were falling-off-the-bone tender and absolutely delicious.

If you're planning on going today, make sure you're well hydrated beforehand, bring extra water and sunblock (maybe even a blanket to sit on the lawn), and head over right at noon. By 12:45 today even the Fast Pass lines were upwards of a half hour for some of the more popular pitmasters, like Mike Mills from 17th Street Bar & Grill. It might also help to recruit a friend or two to find a spot in the shade for a blanket.

12 - 6 p.m., Madison Square Park. Free admission, barbecue is $8 per plate, sides are $4. Proceeds from the day benefit the Madison Square Park Conservancy.

There's a side, that's 12 bucks!

I guess the side is voluntary! lol
Btw, nice nick Calcetines! hehe

BBQ in New York!? That's like eating fajitas in Utah. No thanks!

BBQ seem to be getting big in NYC. I'm sure is has for awhile.

Nevertheless I can only think of the cows on the old el paso commercial going "mooo-york city?"

I went on Saturday and tried 2 places for their $8 plates.

For BLUE SMOKE you got 2 ribs, a slice of potato bread (not homemade) and some cole slaw. Not enough food for the price tag.

From SALT LICK you got a brisket sandwich and a piece of sausage. Actually very filling and satisfying. Some nice pieces of meat. Worth $8.

#4, maybe 10 years ago, but not now.

tried everything yesterday and it was totally underwhelming. blue smoke was well cooked but lacked some flavor. the brunswick stew was pretty interesting but needed a bit of salt. btw, dont bother getting any of the beers cause you cant take it out of the park and you can all of the brands at any other bar. better to get the food and drink somewhere else. fast pass saves a ton of time! you can buy a cheap pass from someone and and just pay cash at the register.

went yesterday. huge crowds, huge waiting lines (without the $100 pass).

Food, not worth it. I went to Georgia's East Side BBQ in LES to satisfy my craving.

If it's anything like it was on Saturday, save yourself the hassle.

I also went yesterday, I had a good time forgetting that I was in the middle of NYC for a little.

I had some good food, I knew it was going to be expensive if you wanted to try more then one restaurant's food but we made a day out of it and had a great time.

If you make a major impact to save the environment, stop eating meat.

#11, please stay on topic.

Salt Lick, always one of my favorites for delicious brisket, ran out VERY early on Sunday; by 3PM; festival only ran from 12-6 PM; Uber Disappointed; Also Fast pass was not so 'fast' for most places; just a very slightly shorter line in the back.

Blahblanyc:

blahblahblah.
