News Flash: It's Really, Really Hot

2008_06_heatwave.jpgBring on the baked Big Apple references, because the "heat advisory" for Bronx, Kings, New York, Queens, Richmond Counties remains in effect until 6 p.m. tonight. Another one will go into effect tomorrow between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m.

The heat wave is expected to last a few days, and Con Ed claims it can meet the extra electricity demand, but a spokesman adds, "Nevertheless, power problems can occur...We'll work very quickly to get them fixed as quickly as possible... On the other side of it, we ask customers to try to conserve energy as best they can. That'll help to really not only conserve energy, but also help save money on their bills."

Hey, that's because Con Ed hiked rates! Still, Con Ed has some good suggestions for conserving energy, like making sure air conditioner filters are clean, set thermostats no lower than 78 degrees and keep shades and blinds closed.

City cooling centers are open in all five boroughs and the city's Office of Emergency Management has suggestions for beating the heat (wear loose clothing! drink water!). And here's the EPA on the heat island effect.

>>> set thermostats no lower than 78 degrees

I love how they tell people to NOT cool the room when it's hot...

78 degrees? Why bother?

Saying to put the AC no lower than 78 is like in the winter saying don't put the heat higher than 60.

AC and Heat should set somewhere between 67-70.

You guys are so wasteful. The recommended lowest thermostat setting in Japan for public buildings is 28C, which is 82.4F.

If 78F is uncomfortable to you, you to lose some body fat, or go out and sweat a little first. Come back in, take a nice cold shower and it won't feel as bad anymore. Also, you can also wear less clothing...

I don't drive, I use mass transit and I don't smoke.

I'm cooling the room so I can sleep to about 70 or 72 degrees. The Japanese can do what they like.

I'm with the "78? What's the point?" crowd. Mine is set at 70, but it's just a small window A/C so it's not using that much juice.

You know who also likes drawn depictions of women being raped by cartoon tentacles?

Yes that's right: The Japanese.

You know it's relative. 78 will feel like paradise when it's 95 degrees outside.
