Nasty Heat Wave on Tap for Weekend

accuwx_heat060608.jpgEnjoy the cool weather today as tomorrow is likely to be twenty degrees warmer. The fog and clouds this morning are typical precursors to the passage of a warm front. This particular front has some mighty hot air behind it. Today's high will be in the mid-70s. The sun may make an appearance after noon. Tomorrow is going to be hot. Look for a near-record high in the mid 90s.

The heat is expected to continue through Tuesday. Highs will be in the mid 90s again on Sunday and Monday, moderating to around 90 on Tuesday. The heat will be accompanied by oppressive humidity.

Excessive heat is the greatest weather-related killer in the U.S. On average, more than 1500 people die each year from excessive heat. Coming early in the season and following a relatively cool stretch, this heat wave will likely feel more miserable than most as we have yet to acclimatize to hot weather. Keep hydrated, slow down, and stay in the shade when outside says the city Office of Emergency Management. Check on your neighbors who might need assistance. Senior citizens and young children are especially vulnerable to excessive heat. Now would be a good time to brush up on heat-beating tips from OEM. Don’t forget your pets.
