I suppose it could be some sort of play on words or cute inside joke. From here, though, it just looks as though the author slept through the grade school lesson on homonyms.

Small grammar/usage quibble: shouldn't this be the early EDITION? 'Early addition' in this context doesn't really make sense. Unless it's morning arithmetic?
