For All-Star Game, Statue of Liberty Gets MLB Makeover

Okay, it's not a makeover for the actual Lady Liberty in the New York Harbor, but Major League Baseball will be putting forty-two 8 1/2 feet tall Statues of Liberty (mini-Liberties) all around New York City to get the city excited for this year's All-Star Game, which will be played at Yankee Stadium.

Each of the Statue Liberties will be painted in:

"bold graphics and colors featuring each of the 30 Major League Baseball clubs, the Brooklyn Dodgers, the New York Giants, the American League, the National League, four All-Star statues and statues commemorating the final season of Yankee Stadium and Shea Stadium, an additional version for the host Yankees, and one to be determined to be painted by the artist as a surprise."
Of course, smaller, 9-inch versions can be purchased by the MLB Store.

And as Yankees management gets ready for the All-Star gamefestivities (COO Lonn Trost said, "There will be a mascot race with 20 some-odd mascots. Where do you dress them? Where do you feed them?"), they are also taking the time to crow how the new Stadium will be awesome.

Now why do you have to go ruin a perfectly good piece of history and symbolism of American freedom like that? Yes, tacky is the right word.

They'd better hire armed security for the BoSox one.

i am all for throwing turds at the red sox one.

    I'm with Spiritof76. TACKY.

  • JMH

    Those are ugly.

Also, Yankee Stadium is a shithole. If they get to host the ASG in their old stadium, the Mets had damn well better get one at New Shea.

  • Spirit of 76

Tacky, tacky, tacky. Did I mention they look tacky?

Maybe MLB can sidetrack some of their million$ spent on junk like this and donate funds towards creating new public parks, for all the land that the new Yankee Stadium has displaced. That would be much more welcome by New Yorkers.

Actually, they are doing Statue of Liberties for all teams--I just put up a gallery of the NY ones, plus the Red Sox one.

But they are all pretty scary.

Another brilliant idea by Bud Selig.

  • nomnomnom

Wow. Those are the ugliest Statue of Liberties ever.

  • EricGewiz

If they were doing this for ALL teams, I would understand the reason for creating a Red Sox statuette. But, since Lady Liberty is in our city, and the rest of the decorative stautettes all refer to NY baseball teams, why would they do that?!

About as clever as commemorative soda cans.

I think I just tasted my lunch.

Which one is on the "juice"? Let the urine testing begin!

  • donner

Ugh the Mets one is hideous.

  • Art Stewel

As a general rule, I advocate extermination of graffiti practitioners because of the harm to the rights holder of personal property, or general society in the case of public property. And then comes along these pieces of crap. Tag away, bombers!
