Greenpoint Sludge Digester Eggs Get Blue Spotlight

060408gpointsewage.jpgThe eight towering sludge digester eggs at the Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant in Greenpoint got even more sci-fi looking last night when the DEP flicked the switch on the new dramatic blue lights illuminating the 145 feet high structures. True to form, New York Shitty was there to get total coverage on the lighting ceremony.

And what a wastewater lighting ceremony it was! There was free cake with the digester eggs – which each process three million gallons of sludge – designed onto the icing, and an introduction by the light's designer Hervé Descottes.

There was even a cameo by DEP commissioner Emily Lloyd, who promised that “people from the Empire State Building observation deck will be able to gaze upon our festively colored sewage treatment plant every night.” So hurry over to the observation deck now before they start charging extra for the view east!

Man, I love that building. One of the most beautiful meldings of form and function I've seen in recent years.

I just hope they can really manage to control the odor when it's working at full capacity, because it certainly does smell like what it is.

I loved how the designer described how the digester eggs would be bathed in a "diaphanous blue glow," and others touted the new lighting system as a way to turn the waste treatment plant into a recognizable landmark from which New Yorkers could orient themselves around the city.

I won't deny that in the daylight the eggs an impressive combination of aesthetics and function, but should New York's giant tanks of crap really be emphasized as skyline landmarks?

One day, maybe the lighting's colors will change with the smell!

For god's sakes, put a bra on those titties.

This is pretty on par with everything in the US these days... create some shite, dress it up with colored lights, call it a landmark... the art of marketing.

Not "sludge" - biosolids. Coming to farms and backyards near you!

Great! This is all we need to take our minds off the fact that those eggs are digesting feces.

...digesting sludge and thereby maintaining public health and wellbeing. It is a deserving tribute to NYC, given that the city was an early pioneer in the realm of sanitation and public works engineering. Just think of the days of yore when fresh shite - both human and horse - was piled waist high along 5th Ave. The digesters are a testament to the ingenuity and vision of New Yorkers. Here here! A toast to digested sludge! May you forever gurgle in peace and prosperity.

Wow, even a cameo by the commissioner of the agency herself! Oh boy!
