Greenpoint's Big Time Now: Duane Reade Moves In

2008_05_duanereadegreenpoint.jpg

Move over Starbucks! Move over Sleepy's! The newest addition to Greenpoint's Manhattan Avenue is...Duane Reade! The drug store joins two Rite-Aids, but at least Duane Reade can say that it's one of a kind in the neighborhood -- and the only drug store on that block of the street. What did the chain replace? A local pharmacy! At least they have signs in three languages.

The new Duane Reade opens on a section of Manhattan Ave that has eight banks (with one to come) in a five block stretch. Soon the neighborhood will look just like the Upper West Side, only with a greater Polish population.

Duane Reade sucks. I went in this weekend to buy something that only 2 months ago generally ran about $11.00 AND i know about increased price because of gas, etc, but does that honestly warrant a jump in $$ from $11 to $19 ????

Guess what Duane Reade, Amazon has everything & more and it's ALL at a fare price, i HOPE you go outta business in this economy, you greedy, money sucking corporate chazer!

In our household, Duane Reade has always been a magical Christmas tale.

Big fucking deal. I lived in that shitty neighborhood in the 80s and would have loved ANY kind of store like a Duane Reade. Back then all that was there was a few bodegas, two mediocre diners, tons of drunk Polacks and the stench of garbage.

Pshaw! Even Staten Island has a Duane Reade.

The only similarity between the UWS and Greenpoint beyond the pharmacies is that one demographic fled Poland at lit torches of the other.

i love greenpoint, but the fondness for chain stores on manhattan avenue is confounding.
