Taste of Times Square Tonight

060208tastetimessquare.jpgIf you’ve got an adventurous appetite and don’t mind a mob scene, tonight’s Taste of Times Square shindig is for you. Starting at 5 p.m., 46th Street between Ninth Avenue and Broadway will be turned over to vendors serving samples from local restaurants. They’ve got everything from Applebee’s to the Hawaiian Tropic Zone, bros! Peruse the full list here; there are also plenty of non-chains like Chop Suey and Chilean restaurant Pomaire.

Tickets redeemable for "tastes" and beverages go on sale at the main ticket booth at 46th Street and Broadway starting at 3 p.m. While you eat/wait on line to eat, there will also be unspecified "local" entertainment on three stages and swing dance lessons from the dapper dandies at Swing46.

And if you miss today’s chance to taste Times Square, you can show up in August to slip it some tongue. Mark your calendars for August 14th, when the Times Square Kiss In commemorates that day in 1945 when over 750,000 people crowded Times Square to hear Truman announce the surrender of newly-nuked Japan. The first 200 couples to engage in PDA will receive “complimentary commemorative Times Square sailor's caps and roses.”

So we have the choice of food poisoning now, or maybe mono in August? Yum.

Is this free?

As if we needed another reason to avoid Times Square.

A "Taste of This" and a "Taste of That". Amateur foodies, 'Taste' my ass!

Wow, that all sounds so tantalizing. But I need to know if the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company will be there too.

Just another sign that NYC is becoming a suburb or a mall. You know how the individual establishments at food courts at the malls have samples, well, this is no different. Times Square or NYC is just a macrocosm of that.

Most , if not all, of these "restaurants" (Applebee's, Red lobster, Chevy's, Bubba Gump, etc. will probably have the same food anyway.

Great! My commute is gonna suck even MORE than it usually does tonight!

Thanks Times Square!

I moved into an apartment on Restaurant Row two years ago. This block is a cesspool of Quebecoise Buses, gatherings 'O shouting drunks outside O'Flaherty's, Scientology practitioners, stage hand pickets and an ever-present constipation of loathsome tourist groups. The residents of this neighborhood, and there really aren't that many of us, put up with a lot so that these restaurants can make their money. They could have at least sent a few tickets our way. Or would that be rubbing salt into the wound?

unspecified "local" entertainment:

Is it free?
