(Not All) Women Love Sex

0608moresatc.jpgHollywood is apparently shocked that women can affect box office sales; Variety notes that after Sex and the City opened this weekend to the tune of $55.7 million, it shattered "decades-old thinking that females -- particularly older ones --can’t fuel the sort of big opening often enjoyed by a male-driven event pic or family movie." Way to go ladies?

The NY Times reports that the romcom's success was mostly thanks to the fairer gender, with 85 percent of the ticket buyers on opening night being women (Warner Brothers reports that more men began showing up over the weekend, however).

“It is kind of mind-boggling,” Sarah Jessica Parker, the “Sex and the City” star, said in a telephone interview from her Manhattan home on Saturday.

“We are thrilled and humbled that the audience came out. I am so excited about the possibilities for movies about women."

The powers that be are already in talks about a sequel -- but will it just turn into a big screen version of The Real Housewives of New York? Just as women take a step towards changing preconceived notions of their role in keeping Hollywood afloat on opening weekends (which is so important), the movie itself takes a giant step back for womankind! Jezebel reports back from the theater with a scathing review, characterizing the silver screen version of the foursome as "fools," "rich bitches," and "assholes" who are self-centered, rude to their help, and full of unflattering attitude.

The perfect accessory to all the frenzy is a story about SJP herself; seems her dress from the New York premiere wasn't very original after being worn out by others (including Lindsay Lohan, no less) despite the designer telling her that wouldn't happen. While she called it "unethical and disappointing that they would allow the dress to be worn again," Gawker counters by pointing out the unethicality of overselling a movie premiere to fans in order to create a nice PR buzz.

Yeah, good to hear a Jezebel quote - newsflash fellas - there's plenty of ladies out there as disgusted by this whole mess as you. (raises hand)

That Jezebel review hits the nail on the head:

I found myself hating every single one of them: Idiotic, superficial Carrie; stuck-up, naggy perfectionist Charlotte; cold, ruthless Miranda and bitter, narcissisitic Samantha.

The sequel should have the Sex and the City cougars meet up with the boys from Entourage.

Not sure how they would pair up though.

^seconds that.

also, let's talk for a moment about that atrocity by fergie.. i caught wind of it.. ans jesus christ, it might possibly be the worst song in the history of all existance.

to qoute:

"lets forget these boys and go shopping!"

it's like women these days are doing everything they possibly can to ruin what our mothers and grandmothers faught for.

fuck you fergie.

sorry if that was a little off topic. fergie makes me want to heave

allie25 and plk779, thank you for restoring my faith in the women of this city. I honestly thought that aside from a select few, women in this city worship the ground that these 4 privileged and phony cunts walk on.

*should have been more clear, the musical holocaust to which i am refering is the song at the begining of the movie by fergie.. it's probably playing at the gates of hell this very moment.

thanks ralph!

I for one was glad to see women line-up in droves, buy tickets way in advance, sell-out midnight screenings and act like actual film nerds for once. I've never seen so many girls around my office geek out so hard over anything and I think they may finally understand why I will be wearing a cape while waiting in the ticket line days before The Dark Knight opens clutching my collectible Heath Ledger action figure, drinking Batman Mountain Dew and interupting every meeting with "WHY SO SERIOUS?!" at inappropriate times. Yeah, I'm sure they'll all get it now...

It wasn't really a "romcom" - it was a drama with a couple funny parts.

Iron Man was awesome!

@monkeymafia I think you'll be a winner with the ladies in the office for sure!

@monkeymafia, you rule.

THERE'S BATMAN MOUNTAIN DEW? o_O

Oh and add me to the list of women who doesn't get the appeal of this show. Does not speak to me at all. I hated going to school with girls like that, and I hated working with women like that. I sure as hell am not going to waste my downtime on tripe like this.

If you're going to make an HBO series into a film, make it out of OZ or Rome.

^ i agree (for your health)

Here's a vote from another NYC woman that doesn't see the appeal of this show/movie. Where are the spaceships, the car crashes, the robots, the dead bodies? Not to mention the show makes my friends think it's OK to spend $400 on a handbag. Who does that?

I watched the show and found it entertaining for the most part but spend $12 to see a movie version? Nah.

I'm definitely going to be at the first showing of Dark Night though. I geek out over comic book movies not designer shoes. Maybe I'm not the typical NY woman.

Waiting in line to see this crap bomb? Then you're dateless, clueless, and Jimmy Choo's shoeless.
