With Puerto Rico Victory, Clinton Says "It's Not Over"

2008_06_hillarypr.jpgSenator Hillary Clinton won the Puerto Rico primary with about two-thirds of the votes over Senator Barack Obama. However, there was low voter turnout in what was considered an expected victory for Clinton, who campaigned vigorously on the island.

Clinton campaign chairman Terry McAuliffe used the win to point to Obama's problems connecting with Latinos, telling reporters, “It was a 100 percent Hispanic primary and it shows that he has a problem with the Latino community...He cannot close in this key core constituency." Some exit poll information: 31% of voters polled found race important (and 63% of them voted for Clinton) and 34% said they didn't know enough about Obama, while one 16% said that about Clinton.

Still, Obama will, according to the AP, pick up 17 of Puerto Rico's 55 delegates and got the support of two superdelegates. Though many Democrats (even Clinton supporters) wonder why she's still running, she continued to emphasize her larger percentage of the popular vote and said, “My political obituary has yet to be written. It’s not over til it’s over.

One thing that will be over: The primary season, as the very last one are on Tuesday in South Dakota and Montana.

    Hillary looks like H.R.Puffnstuff.

She's a bitch yes, but I'd vote for Hillary...a candidate's personality is important, but their actions and their politics take precedence in my book hands down.

I know a lot of starry-eyed Obama supporters who basically know squat about his (or any of the candidates) real politics... And this troubles me.

My point is that whoever you end up picking, you have a responsibility to have done your homework. Objectively judge each candidate for the president they would be and do so by constantly seeking out as many SPECIFIC details as you can find on their actual politics.

I love it when New Yorkers talk about the midwest not voting for Obama when it was Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois who sent him flying to the forefront of the race.

If I recall correctly, the entire easter seaboard voted for Hillary.

I think the real question is, will hick states like New York, PA and NJ vote for Obama?

After her and her supporters insistence that ONLY she can beat Sen. McCain, I'm not sure I'd vote for her to be in the Senate again.

You know, I'm getting worried. It's some youtube video that Ch11 was showing last night that did it for me - some 65 yo waitress from Manhattan ranting and raving outside the DNC meeting about how the Democratic party had chosen some "inadequate black man" over Hillary, thus consigning women like her to second-class citizenship.

Any objective analysis of Hillary's run would suggest that she lacks the character to be a good president, from the proposed gas tax holiday (dismissing the criticisms from economists) to the handful of truly foolish statements she's made (Bosnia, hardworking white americans, RFK assassination) to this hypocritical attempt to overturn the rules in FL.

Yet, this is the country where, in '04, a large percentage apparently thought the threat of gay marriage was more important than the war in Iraq. The dumb people are surging again, and they seem to have the momentum.

What the hell is she wearing in that picture? It looks like she's about to handle radioactive material.

In case anybody hasn't figured this out yet:

Whatever a Clinton says = Opposite is True

Rules are rules, they will only circumvent them for their own personal gain. Obama is winning by every metric. Hillary does not have the popular vote. Tell that to my friends in Detroit who stayed home on election day b/c they'd already been told their votes wouldn't count.

I love that pose - "Hey! There you are! Yes, you! I see you RIGHT THERE! Hi!"

At this point, she probably figures she may as well hang on until the convention. If somehow Obama were to self-destruct, she could step in. And if Obama loses in the general election, she will no doubt argue in 2012 that she should have been the candidate and (dubiously) claim she had the popular vote in the primary.

I'm kind of surprised she's still standing-- that whopper about sniper fire would have been enough to kill most candidacies. Her flip-flop on Florida and Michigan is the most self-serving thing in recent memory - agreeing to the rules ahead of time, and then trying to change them - but she keeps going. She shows she has political stamina, it's just really too bad that, in 6 years as our Senator, she hasn't shown half the energy and enthusiasm that she displays in running for office.

    unbelievable.

  • BINGORAMAIREZ

She is a sick racist and so is Mccain, who hates all black people. refusing to pay back reparations to ALL people of color. They use the cops to put their foot on our necks and try to scare us off... but that aint happnin'. Rev. Sharpton is securing our voting positions and we will see BO as number one.

  • Roquentin

Obama held office in Illinois. Saying that he can't win in the Midwest is ludicrous, at least in the upper Midwest. Having grown up there I can say people out here really underestimate how strongly most people oppose Hillary out there.

And Hillary should have thrown in the towel a couple months ago. This has become embarrassing. She's wasting everyone's time and money by continuing.

  • sonyactivision

In a year when Democrats are polling far higher than their Republican counterparts, winning special elections in solidly Republican districts, and igniting a fervor that has drawn record numbers to the polls in this primary season, Obama is barely polling 50% against a hapless, feeble John McCain. Drink all your Kool-Aid now kids, 'cause the pitcher runs dry on November 4th.

  • BINGORAMAIREZ

She is a crazy racist trying to stop BO.

  • babyhitler

It's going to be very hard for Obama to Appeal to midwest voters and the fence sitters cause the only way he's going to appeal to them is by not being black. I personally think he's a white guy but most of those rednecks won't vote for him.

  • jenspellnogood

Terry McAuliffe, hand picked by Bill as chairman of the DNC, changed the rules 2 years ago to favor a still undeclared (and cagey about it at that) Hillary. Genius figured she would be unchallenged by the new super duper tuesday, and when it all came down to a flawed strategy, they try and change, and ignore the rules after the fact.

the arguments they make are baseless, certainly that she's a stronger candidate based on the primary popular vote. even IF half her votes go to McCain, obama still takes him, as of today.

It's been over since a little bit of the veil was lifted off the clinton's and their motivations. they are a disgusting bunch, and will wear whatever face they need, any time they need it. they are insidious and bitter, and if they don't get their way, no one gets their own either.

McCain or Obama is better than a Clinton or a Bush - end the dynasties, they were never any good. sever us from all their allegiances and progenies.

  • TN

Any Clinton supporter who ends up voting for McCain is either A) a very sore loser or B) has an issue with Obama's skin color which is more likely among older white women, Hillary's core supporters.

    Anyway, Go Obama !!!

  • Dave Hogarty

Oh my, talk about grasping at straw polls and counting on delicate delegates. I think I've actually lost the thread of what Clinton is attempting to accomplish. In a best-case scenario she'll win the Democratic Party nomination in a fiasco that will make Florida 2000 look like a Civil Rights triumph, and she will summarily LOSE the Presidential race.

The Dems should do themselves a favor and hire their own personal evil genius--i.e. smart person James Carville--to get their asses whipped into shape. It's a freakin' clown college in that camp! I don't know what Carville's charging these days, but Dem's can't possibly afford NOT to pay him.

For the sake of a good race, I beseech someone to pony up some cash, otherwise it's going to be a McGovern-esque landslide and we'll be inaugurating President McCain in January.

  • graybanks

Personally, I'm psyched to vote for someone else for the senate seat. Not exactly sure how she won her seat back in 2006 with authorizing the war and all, but eh.

White, black, puerto rican, everyone's just a-freakin'.

  • MisterTissue

She's sowing the fields with salt.

Also, doesn't Puerto Rico not get any electoral votes come the fall?

  • John Del Signore

Splicer FTW. The Clinton game plan now is all about making Obama's primary victory seem illegitimate in the eyes of her supporters. If they can damage him enough among Democrats on their way out the door, then the Clinton campaign slogan for 2012 writes itself: "I Told You So!"

  • cool

Terry McAuliffe is funny...and shameless. Essentially says that Hispanics don't like black people. Awesome campaign that the Clintons are running.

It's almost as funny as the Clinton supporters who will vote for McCain instead of Obama. Clinton and Obama have virtually identical voting records, whereas McCain is almost the mirror opposite (assuming a Democrat/Republican spectrum). So, for a Clinton supporter to switch to McCain, it would be an indication that Clinton supporters really don't stand for anything. It's just petty politics. Once again, awesome campaign for the Clintons.

  • Splicer

#5 - Maybe Hillary's supporters should just start supporting McCain then and stop calling themselves Democrats if they're so self-centered as to not vote because their candidate didn't win. Then again, being self-centered is what Hillary's campaign is all about. It's almost stunning in its egoism.

  • Dude69

#1 - You and naive Obama supporters don't know anything about politics. Hillary will still be re-elected Senator even if she looses the nomination. New York is not just NYC.

Also no guarantee that Obama can beat McCain either, if few of Clinton's supporters vote for him in the general election.

  • David McCaffredy

How insanely damaging would it be to the Democratic Party as a whole if the officials somehow give the nomination to her? Hello third party in 2012.

  • west side Michael

This will be the year of the independents running

for office (to defy their former party affiliations) Rodham & Romney.

    No, really, it's over.

“My political obituary has yet to be written"

No- your political career is DEAD. You wont even be re-elected to the Senate with your disgraceful actions in this election. Clinton is finished in politics.
