Mugger Attacks Cop's Family, Is Quickly Killed

muggershot.jpgAn attempted mugging proved fatal for the attacker late yesterday evening, as a man followed a woman and her three-year-old child into their building shortly before midnight Saturday. The mugger apparently did not know that the pair's husband and father was a NYPD officer who was off-duty at the time. When the man attacked the woman and brandished a gun after they get off the elevator on the 3rd floor, the mother screamed. Her husband rushed from their apartment and shot the mugger once in the torso--a wound which was fatal.

A fourth man who accompanied the trio in the Bedford Park, Bronx building's elevator said that the man seemed very serious and was trying to hide his face with a hat. According to investigators, the cop only returned fire after the mugger shot at him once and missed. Mortally wounded, the attacker fled from the building and had the presence of mind to ditch his gun in the wheel well of a nearby parked car before collapsing. He later died at the Montefiore Medical Center.

The Daily News points out that the unsuccessful mugger was the fourth person to be shot by a police officer this week.

I bet that cop was pretty surprised when he found out his wife was attacked because she was secretly stashing 20 grand in their house for her boyfriend who's in prison and who won it in an illegal lottery!!!!!

    HAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAHHA!

    nice shot!

Another fine field prosecution! If only they were all this neat and tidy.

and that bullet cost around 40 cents, with law enforcement discount, of course.

Got a reference for that stat?

You'd be more convincing if you showed me that this same group of "black and hispanic" moviegoers only watched movies like "the Strangers." Otherwise, it's more of your ridiculous race-trolling.

All your "stat" tells me is that there are a lot of idiotic white, black, and hispanic Americans who enjoy crappy films. Let's recap:

Horror movie about a home invasion - remake of a popular French film

Fairytale movie about a bunch of 40-something women who are looking for great sex, material goods, and glamorous lives - re-telling of a TV series

Fantasy film about a "heroic" aging archaeologist-swashbuckler - continuation of a (15-20? year old) franchise

I'd suggest that all are fairly moronic for spending money on this garbage.

    Go NYPD!

    Baby Hitler, I

You know what's funny? This weekend "the Strangers" made 20.7 million at the box office. The movie is about Home Invasion and killing. The funny stat is that 55% of moviegoers were black and hispanic. While everyone else watched Sex and the City and Indiana.

Death IS the "appropriate and proportionate response" when an armed man attacks your wife and 3-year-old child.

It's only here in Moscow-on-the-Hudson and other quasi-socialist paradises (DC, Chicago, England) where a non-cop can't protect his family with a gun.

If the husband of the mugging victim had been, say, a magazine editor instead of a cop, he and his family might have wound up dead.

  • Anna_Merkin

It's consistent with the description of the perp in this crime: http://gothamist.com/2008/06/01/woman_found_mur_2.php

    Stop being a tool.

  • berniegoetz

Dave, you forgot to mention that the mugger was Latino. Or did Jen simply ask you not to?

  • NAB

Being a mugger is a dangerous job...it was on that TV Show "World's Most Dangerous Jobs."

  • JacqueMehoff

to bad not all of us has the privilege to have a gun to protect our families. well, we can have one but to carry one is another story.

  • sj

Death may not be the appropriate/proportionate punishment for mugging, but as a mugger that's a risk you assume. After all, people can reasonably be expected to fight to protect what is rightfully theirs. If you don't want to assume that risk, then don't mug people. That's easy enough.

Now while getting shot and killed may be disproportionate to a mugging, it is certainly a perfectly acceptable response for taking a shot at the husband of the person you are mugging. If you're a mugger and you're gonna fire a gun at someone you can certainly expect the same in return and rightly so.

So in this case score one for the good guys.

Dr. Zip. The other guy started it. And yes death is a great deterrent for asshole muggers. In fact it is a permanent deterrent. It's a shame their whole family can't be taken out at the same time.

  • kcin122

no but shooting at another person comes close.

  • dr zippy

yes, because death is the appropriate and proportionate response to a mugging.

  • ^i disagree.

  • TKaisen

If more New Yorkers were allowed to defend themselves in this fashion, crime would plummet.

  • that just saved the tax payers over 100K in legal fees. thankfully the bullet only cost 23¢.

  • Splicer

Darwin at work again making sure that this one particular moron does not go on to do the same or worse to the next person.
