Focus on Family to Sue Over Gay Family Recognition

dobson.jpgA legal team with the backing of James Dobson is ready to file a legal suit against New York State, claiming that Gov. David Paterson illegally sidestepped the State Legislature when he declared a state of reciprocity in recognizing gay marriages ordained in other states.

Dobson is the head of a ministry called Focus on the Family, which is dedicated to protecting what it views as immutable Christian social values, including the long-held human value of the sanctity of marriage. He is a thorn in the side of even moderate Republicans, who would prefer that he not continue his persistent campaign of insisting that homosexuals are damaged individuals who should not be the recipients of the legal protection extended to "normal" Americans.

Paterson announced that NY State would recognize gay marriages ordained in other states based upon the ruling of a federal court. Dobson, whose organization is based in Arizona, is claiming this is an in-through-the-back door attempt at spreading the prevalence of gay marriage, by double-teaming the country with California.

The NY State Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno is also unhappy with Paterson's decision and may end up taking the Governor to court to fight it.

WHY DOES DOBSON CARE? People who get so bunged up about these issues must have issues themselves. They have to.

  • JMH

Perverse standards like equality? God, what assholes.

  • Snoopy

I guess if I was gay and English, Quentin Crisp would be the name I would take.

Too funny Wammo ... perverse standards, WTFE, what is perverse is to deny any healthy and mutual relationship public or legal status. What is perverse is to allow men to beat the shit out of their wives in the name of a 'marriage' covenant, or for relationships to be the vehicle that allows you to chop your girl-friend up before jumping off a building.

Dobson needs to face reality, he is on a loosing streak. The tide is turning globally on the issue of human rights, exposing laws that at one time were appropriate, now are no longer. Dobson may sue and win now, who knows, but the battle is over for his cause. Oh and you might just want to remember, there are plenty of us gay people out there who also have religious views, seek perversion no more than the majority of society and actually try to be caring people of faith.

Demonizing gay people is a fear tactic, one that allows broader society to avoid facing the facts that we collectively carry responsibility for the perversion and hurt that exists in our communities. Wake up, take responsibility and actually be an agent of change for good in our city - something that James Dobson does little of.

It was a gay Englishman, Quentin Crisp, who once said: "In an expanding universe, time is on the side of the outcast. Those who once inhabited the suburbs of human contempt find that without changing their address they eventually live in the metropolis." That is the legacy of change I believe in.

I feel so warm and fuzzy when I look at that logo.

Marriage, generally, is a dead letter. I can't understand why gays want to yoke themselves with this quaint relic of the past. Welcome to anti-utopia.

If you like other men, you're gay. If you like James Dobson, you're a fucking fag.

Nope, Whammo, do your research. Laws barring same-sex marriage were very much imposed by the Judeo-Christian regime: same-sex marriages were recognized in the ancient world and in other parts of the world up until recent times. Not to mention that in some parts of the world, there are still ceremonial marriages between people and trees, which, to the best of my knowledge, do not have gender. Look it up. In addition, the only ones who have a bee in a bonnet right now about gay marriage are fundamentalist Christians. What does Focus on Family seek to promote? That's right, Christian values. They're seeking to impose their beliefs on everyone else.

As to what the law allows: I will remind you that at one point, the law thought that slavery was OK, that segregation was OK, that women shouldn't vote, that Native Americans should be herded along the Trail of Tears, and so on. The laws of this country have long been formulated on people's religious and personal beliefs and prejudices.

Again, if you don't want a gay marriage, don't have one. Don't impose your religious values on others' lives, though. That's not your right.

No, DUMBASS, most pedophiles are GAY MEN, period. Like the ones you find traveling to Mexico, Tailand, the Dominican Republic etc... going for little BOYS only !!! They are NOT straight, they are GAY. Face facts. And GAY priests being pedophiles is a big no-no and warrants an attack on the Catholic church but the run of the mill ordinary GAY pedophile man is OK right ??? You think because you make up a statement that straights are pedophiles and gays are not that it is going to be accepted as fact Fuck You !!! Just like the GAY PEDOPHILE police sergeant that is head of the gay cop group "GOAL". He was raping little boys all over the place. He got busted and is headed to jail. I hope Rev. Sharpton can put more of these sick, gay, racist cops in prison.

  • AHT

But someone from Arizona sticking his nose in totally isn't messing with the New York legislature at all. Right. Focus on your own damn family, Mr. Dobson.

  • Whammo

Sorry "roe", but the law defines marriage as a contract between a man and a woman, not christians.

  • sonyactivision

What the fuck is up with that shitty logo? Is "Focus On The Family" a brand of granola or the title of a John Denver TV special? Why is it always 1978 in that idiot freakshow world they live in?

  • hungryghoast

If Focus On The Family is against it then it must be a good thing. One of the worst and stupidest organizations in America.

  • Blairy Blair

I'm so sick of people filing lawsuits to try to change the law in states in which they do not reside. Mind your own business, Dobson, you loser.

  • nivek

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Dobson had an elaborate basement and hid some boys there, kinda like that Joesph Fritzl nutjob.

  • holyfrijole

Dumbass, priests can't get married anyway.

And most pedophiles are straight [married] men.

    People are dumb.

  • BINGORAMAIREZ

Does this mean the GAY PEDOPHILES can get married now ??? You know, the GAY PEDOPHILE priests ???

  • roe

Well, Whammo, if you as a Christian or conservative define marriage as being between a man and a woman, you're welcome to uphold that personal value for yourself. You're not welcome to impose your religious value on everyone else, or to expect the government to define its laws based on your beliefs. Somehow I don't think that allowing gay partners to enjoy the same rights as straight ones is "perverse." It's what should be.

  • chubbyonekanubby

Yeah Whammo, cause us straight people are doing a grand job of upholding the sanctity of marriage.

  • dr zippy

Dobson is a fear-mongering ass. Gay marriage does no harm to heterosexual marriage.
