Last Night's Action: An Unhappy Homecoming

2008_05_jtorre.jpgJoe Torre’s return to New York wasn’t a happy one as the Mets beat up on the Dodgers 8-4 Thursday.

David Wright blasted two home runs and the top five hitters in the Mets’ lineup went 11-for-21. Claudio Vargas did not pitch very well in what could possibly be his last start, but he did enough for the win. The New York bullpen shut the door with 3-1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

The crowd still gave Torre a warm welcome and, during the the seventh inning when he went to remove reliever Scott Proctor, they applauded for Torre who tipped his cap at them.

The win makes it three-straight for the Mets and returns them back to .500 at 26-26. It’s not where they expected to be when the season started, but they are only four-games behind Florida and with Pedro Martinez likely to return next week things are suddenly looking a lot better than they have over the past few weeks.

class act Met fans...

thanks for giving Torre some love in his first visit back to NYC.
now if only you could give some love to YOUR manager who is one of the best things to happen to your team.

Maybe Torre isn't as good as he was cracked up to be. It's not as if he got a lot of practice running a REAL team...

true, the Mets are only four games back from Florida - but the Phillies are only half a game behind Florida and Atlanta is only 2 games behind. Things might be looking up, but they're still in fourth (our of five) in the division. Of course, it's also only May.

What do you mean unhappy? The Mets won the game.

In what way is Willie Randolph (who doesn't have any clue how to manage a bullpen, no thanks to Torre) one of the best things to happen to the Mets? The team they had in 2006, a retarded monkey could've gotten them to the playoffs.
