Injured Actress Ousted from Williamsburg Loft

0805pota.jpgKatalin Pota (pictured), the actress who played Tony Soprano's housekeeper Lilliana, has been ousted from her Williamsburg loft on Grand Avenue. The building she lived in is owned by Simon Taub, the man who built a wall in the middle of his Borough Park mansion to separate himself from his wife.

To rewind a bit, Pota was assaulted back in 2001 in New Jersey while trying to protect a friend from an attacker; the incident landed her a broken right arm, lacerations to her face, legs and torso and torn ligaments in her knee. The state has been subsidizing her rent since. Last year Pota signed an agreement (which she now says she signed "under duress") in Brooklyn Housing Court saying she would move out after the Health Department stopped subsidizing her $1,300 rent. Now she's been tossed out because of a new policy that "bans payments to buildings with violations or without certificates of occupancy."

Turns out Taub doesn't actually have a certificate of occupancy for the building, and according to the Buildings Department he owns about 40 illegal residential rentals and owes $68,000 in fines.

Pota claims Taub had threatened her, something that he claims was an accusation provoked by his wife to make him look bad; he says he just wanted the rent. Now Pota has been "homeless" since May 14th; she says "This is endangering the welfare of a disabled person. I need a subsidized space to recover. I am an artist, I want to recover. I worked all my life."

I am very skeptical as to whether she's still disabled.

Skeptical? She was attacked 7 years ago! Of course she's disabled!! Broken arms don't heal overnight, ya know!

btw....the article could not have ended better. "But"

Awesome Jen!!

I think I would volunteer to have my arm broken too, if it could get me a $1,300/month loft in a decent area.

I'm going to need a flow chart.

For not a great actress she must have bad genes if she can't recover from a broken arm in seven years. Oh I forgot she had a boo boo on her knee also. Not a bad scam when you figure she got over $105,000 in free rent during her convalescent period.

Regardless of whether or not she's still disabled, this Simon Taub sounds like a real piece of work.

wow the landlord sounds like evil dude. someone burn down his buildings.

Taub renting buildings to folks without a C.of O.
Isn't that illegal? He got what he deserved from this tenant ,so did the city for not checking on
this dud actress to see if she was healed.
Business as usual in Bookland.

Waaah! I'm an aaaarrrrtist....I need a place to recoverrrrrrrrrrrrr.......A subsidiiiiiiiiized place to recoverrrrrrrrrrrr from my seven year old injuriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiies. Bwah!

She wasn't too disabled to be in The Sopranos, was she?

what is the building number? how many sq. ft?

I'm sure there a re lot more "Pota's" out there taking advantage of subsidized apts. An people complain that the land lord are harassing them. About time they kick them out int the curb. Let those who can afford the place rent the apartment.

Isn't she getting royalties from the Sopranos?

What ever doctor was used to correct the lacerations to her face should be sued.

She is one of those "one hit wonders" that are normally assigned to the music world but now assigned to acting as well.

Let me summarise this article.

The old hag was on welfare for some injury over 7 years ago. She scammed the goverment into paying her rent all these years, while still working as a union actor.

All this while getting residuals from every freaking Sopranos episode she's ever been in thats still shown on reruns or sold on DVD.

The government wakes up to her scam, and lets her off lightly by not paying her rent, when they could have her arrested.

Now her landlord kicks her out because no one is paying the rent.

Typical Jen Carlson to try to twist this article to show her aging "artist" friends in a good light.

It is not right to insult a defensless crime victim, especially without knowing the facts.
She is a hero, she was brutally assaulted because she saved the life of a disabled friend, who was attacked by coward criminals.
She was thrown down a flight of stairs, they broke her right arm, teeth, nose, crushed her vocal cords and she suffered a concussion. She had multiple surgeries on her arm, knee, nose, jaw, and she still needs more operations.
Her health deteriorated, because she was unselfishly taking care for years of the other crime victim, who suffered major brain injury. She could not receive the necessary treatments and therapies, being a full time, unpaid caregiver for someone in need.
She was never on welfare, she worked in all her life. She was awarded social security disability in 2005 by the court.
She always paid her rent, which was a large chunk of her limited income. She did not receive the money, it was the convicted felon Simon Taub, who collected rent subsidy from the government by committing fraud. It is against the law to charge rent in an illegally converted building without certificate of occupancy.
The "loft" is a studio apartment with concrete floor in an awful factory building.
The Daily News conveniently "forgot" to mention, that the wife abuser criminal, Simon Taub with multiple arrest record, doesn't even own the building, the whole lawsuit is a fraud.
By the way, she did not lose the apartment, "somebody" damaged her lock with crazy glue, the police is investigating. One wonders, who had the motive to do this ruthless crime.
Finally, this is the second time that the Daily News steals the credit from the crime victim, who suffered brain injury. He was a wonderful photographer before he was viciously assaulted. The picture was taken by him before they were attacked.
The Daily News definitely owes an apology to the two innocent crime victims, so does anyone else, who made ignorant, cruel, offending remarks.
Hopefully there are decent individuals around, who wish her full recovery, so she can continue the work she loves.
