Pencil This In

carrots0805.jpgMUSIC: We hadn't heard a thing about The Carrots (pictured) until seeing their name listed as a part of Cake Shop's bill tonight. A listen to their MySpace confirmed these Austinites are just as good as their namesake. The group lists their moms and The Ronettes as influences; give a listen to their 60s sound and decide for yourself.

10 p.m. // Cake Shop [152 Ludlow St] // $3

FILM: As part of the World Science Festival, the Paley Center screens Parallel Worlds, Parallel Lives. "In this poignant documentary, Mark Oliver Everett, creative force behind the indie rock band Eels, embarks on a personal journey to understand the astounding contribution that his reclusive father Hugh Everett made to physics — a theory of parallel worlds.

Following the screening, Everett will be joined by theoretical physicists Michio Kaku and Max Tegmark, and physicist/moderator Brian Cox, to explore why — fifty years later — his father's work is now gaining wider acceptance." If you miss out, the film will be broadcast on PBS this fall.

6 p.m. // The Paley Center [25 W 52nd St] // $25

HAPPY HOUR: "Vegan Drinks is a monthly social networking* event for people interested in promoting veganism and advocating for animal rights"...and drinking! Right? Be a cupcake aficionado, an animal lawyer, whatever, just be a vegan. The group notes this is not a singles event, though you may just find the vegan of your dreams here anyway. Tonight is the inaugural event, held at former-vegan Pete Wentz's bar Angels & Kings.

7 p.m. // Angels & Kings [500 East 11th St] // Free

THEATER: It’s hard to really know what to expect from You're Welcome, The Debate Society’s latest opus. The work-in-process will be uncorked tonight for the first time at Dixon Place; they’re describing it as “a collection of 5 small works about creation & failure. This unified theatrical myth tells the story of an invented band of performers & their catastrophic attempts at connection.” That’s all we know, but it’s enough to go on because The Debate Society’s theatrical brilliance can’t be argued with. – John Del Signore

8 p.m. // Dixon Place [258 Bowery, 2nd Floor] // $15
