And we at the firearms desk always recommend Glaser Safety Slugs in .45, .40 &9mm.

A 45 has a lot of take down power versus a 38. Full auto 45's is the wave of the future for cops.

If you think 10 shots is a lot when you're firing at 2 armed attackers and your adrenaline is in the red, you don't know anything about firearms or the body's fight or flight response.

"Can't he shoot him in the leg? Can't he fire one shot and put him down?" Jesus Christ.

Once and for all, real life is not like a fucking Lethal Weapon movie.

eyekantspel, what does the number of shots have to do with it? This is a classic deadly force situation. These guys were actively attacking a woman with blades. You don't have time to stop and have a chat and suggest they knock it off. That's really not going to do it. From a legal standpoint, if you have a reason to use deadly force, then you keep using it until the threat stops. The threat may stop if the guys get scared and take off. OK so then you stop shooting. The threat may stop if the guy takes a round and drops the knife and gives up. OK so at that point you stop shooting. If it takes 10 shots before the guys either give up or are otherwise incapacitated, then that's how many shots it takes. From a legal standpoint, as long as the force is justified, deadly force is deadly force. One bullet is the same as 10 bullets is the same as 50 bullets. It takes what it takes and you can't pose an absolute quota on that because every situation is different.

One bullet, unless you manage to get extremely lucky and hit the guy in the center of the forehead, is not going to stop a motivated attacker. With the adrenaline going they may not even feel the bullets or if they do they may just think they are getting punched or hit with a stick. It ain't like the movies where the guy gets hit with one bullet and goes flying backward through the wall.

The article doesn't have any information on how many times each guy was hit. It's probably safe to assume he might have missed a couple times when you're dealing with moving targets and trying to make sure you don't shoot the victim.

From the officer's standpoint, he also may not have known right away if he hit or missed the guys. If he's firing and they're still attacking then he wouldn't necessarily know if he hit or not. If they're still attacking then he's gotta keep shooting until they stop.

It's only after the fact that he's going to find out how many of his rounds hit the guys and how many rounds he fired.

The cuts he received certainly didn't affect his judgment as it sounds like he did everything right in this situation. It's a good thing he was there and I would definitely have to applaud him as a hero.

I can just imagine that you were the victim and after it's all over, you pop up and tell the guy "you know, thanks I guess, but really couldn't you have done it in 1 or 2 shots?"

Not to completely bash the cop, he was injured at the time, so maybe that affected his judgment or ability to aim.

I just don't think that the cop should be applauded here- he was doing what anyone with a gun would have been able to do in the same situation. Both he and the girl were lucky that, by virtue of his job, he was licensed to carry a gun, because if he hadn't been armed the outcome would have been different.

I don't understand how some people are applauding this cop as a hero.

First off, he's from the precint in Astoria- she calls and says she got harrassing phone calls and he goes to see her at 123 Baxter Street? Please. I kind of doubt he'd be doing follow up like that, off duty no less, if she was a fat ugly chick in the Bronx.

So this cop wants to flirt with the girl, goes to her workplace, 2 guys come in to rob the place, toss him out on the street, assault her, and this hero comes back in and needs to fire TEN shots to subdue them? 10 shots? This isn't outdoors in a dark alley, or while they are in a car driving at him, but at close range in the well-lit lobby of a building.

I could see maybe one or two shots, but 10? yeah, let's throw this guy a parade.

Am I the only one who thinks he wouldn't be giving her problem this much attention if she wasn't cute?

. Since she had received harassing phone calls from her ex that evening, Gjeli called Carrano, who stopped by 123 Baxter Street where she works

I do find it interesting that they include the details of dv complaint that brought the detective there in the first place. intriguing.

Also, re this breathalyzer thing: if i am someday under attack and an off duty cop strolls by who could potentially save my life, i hope he doesn't decide to walk away because he was coming back from happy hour. that said, cops should NOT have their weapons on them when drinking.

Glad to see it in the paper that not all cops shoot unarmed people. Hey if you trying to rob and rape a chick who is just doing her job if you get shot so be it. As they so no risk no reward if you want to pull a weapon be prepared for some one to fight back

very tappable.
who knows, maybe it really was a robbery attempt and Carrano was there visiting but that's too boring and simple to make the news.

If you read the story, Carrano was following up with Gjeli on an open harassment complaint previously made by her against her ex. I wouldn't be surprised if the ex put the two thugs up to this.

actually this is above canal street so it's little chitaly.
was she a desk clerk/concierge at 10pm? or showing units to buyers which would explain the cop working off-duty. Gjeli, is this one of them new ethnic whites coming into the city? back then we called them Polish, Italian, Irish.
