Newsday Interviews People from "DWI Wall of Shame"

2008_05_40yrv.jpgNassau County's unusual decision to release the names and photographs of everyone arrested for DWI over the Memorial Day weekend was both hailed and decried. Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi was moved to post the details and asked media outlets to run the information after a drunk driver plowed into a police cruiser--the police officer, who had just pulled over another drunk driver, was critically injured.

Newsday spoke to a few of the arrestees, who are innocent until proven guilty, of course. One, a 55-year-old woman who was pulled over after a birthday celebration, said her mother always warns her about drinking and driving. Maryann Moyer said her mother even warned her about publicizing the arrestees:

"She had heard on the news that they were going to take pictures and put them in the paper," Moyer said of the Nassau County Wall of Shame.

But after she met friends at an East Meadow bar and began drinking screwdrivers, her mother's warning about the new Nassau policy "didn't cross my mind."

She ate breakfast at the bar and left when it closed at 4 a.m. Sunday. A few blocks away, she saw the flashing lights of a police car in her rearview mirror and ended up with her first DWI arrest.

Moyer is worried about her job, but did say, "I might have to take a cab next time so it won't happen again or just don't drink any liquor."

One arrestee was more upset about being kept in a holding cell for so long, but thought it was fair to publicize the arrests, since he was drinking and driving. Another, who said people made fun of him on his MySpace and Facebook pages, is considering a lawsuit.

Sorry, creeps, but anytime you endanger the lives of others, you lose any sympathy I might give. What are they supposed to do, wait for you to run someone over before they can run your picture? Especially the jackass who wants to sue. Twice the legal limit and he thinks there's a snowball's chance in hell that he'll be found innocent? I think I'm going to look at that list and see if I can't find out who he is and put some more nice comments on his MySpace and Facebook pages.

My favorits is "I might have to take a cab next time so it won't happen again or just don't drink any liquor."

Might? How far does it have to go before you "don't."

Is that Facebook or "Faced book"?

The country is entering a new prohibition era...only we're getting this one on the installment plan.

that one woman drank and drove even though she knew about Suozzi's plan to post the faces of DWI?

and this other tool is considering a lawsuit?! on what grounds? online embarassement? god.

people make me sick.

People naturally are stupid... then when they're called out, they become indignant & incensed about it. Like omg how dare you publicize my idiocy for everyone to see.

If Nassau County wanted to really get them, they should put a slideshow up on youtube too or something. Isn't that what the cool kids do these days anyway?
