Woman Sexually Assaulted in Soho

2008_05_sohosa.jpgEarly this morning, a woman was attacked in the courtyard of her apartment building on Prince Street at Sullivan. Police say the suspect may have followed her from the subway.

The incident took place around 3:30 a.m.; according to police, the 19-year-old victim was sexually assaulted after the suspect threatened her with a box cutter. After he fled, police dispatched the K-9 and aviation units to search for the attacker, who is described as, per WABC 7, "a black man, with a stocky build, wearing a short sleeve jersey, jeans and a blue baseball cap." He also has "distinctive" pock marks on his face.

Another woman was sexually assaulted at her Sullivan Street apartment building last month. According to First Precinct crime statistics (PDF), there have been 6 rapes so far this year--compared with 3 during the same period in 2007 (there were a total of 7 rapes in 2007). And in March, a man was arrested after he followed a woman from a subway station into an East Harlem building and raped her in the elevator.

colleenMM: i wasn't blaming the victim & i'm sorry if it came across the way, i was just trying to give other female readers some advice for the future.

Sexually degraded in the worse way, right in the open courtyard of your building.

    Imagine that.

How many prying eyes peeked out their windows and caught the show? Courtyards are usually so quiet that any disturbance would draw attention.

I don't really think it's fair to say what the victim "should have" done in the situation, Zodack.

"Police say the suspect may have followed her from the subway."

these subway comments are irrelevant. the girl was attacked at her building.

at 4am, no woman should be giving anyone cigarettes or telling them the time, or lending them your cell phone. she should have pulled out her pepper spray & gave him some in the eye just for getting near her.

reported rapes, the actual rapes are probably in the hundreds

Goes to show you that no matter how trendy a nabe you live in you are not safe from creeps. The subway stations can be empty at nighttime and now that metrocard machines have practically replaced human workers ,makes it even scarier. Plus, the area is flooded with cabs so many people won't take the subway.
