A lot of people have been killed by somebody wearing a baseball cap; that doesn't mean it's a violent symbol. Shame on Dunkin Donuts for pulling the ad.

Kreo, I am a US citizen and a small group of people, not representative of millions of Muslims, attacked us.

Despite that, I really think this "Keffiyeh issue" is a bunch of extremists acting bat shit crazy.

#47, there is no such thing as "zionist terrorists" anymore.
Do not confuse political assasination of someone protected by bodyguards (cowardly Rabin's termination) with real terrorism - pigs killing and violently beheading on camera random innocent people with the sole purpose of planting the seeds of terror in the hearts of volnurable general public.
It is a fact that in the eyes of some who were exposed in one way or another to the islamo-fashists' terror acts the keffiyeh will always represent an attribute of terror.
I am a US citizen and islamo-fashists openly declared a war on my very own US - that makes me very sensitive to the keffiyeh issue.

I've always had a sneaking feeling that Rachel Ray was a terroist. Thirty minute meals a convienence? Ha! They just give everyone more time to plot and build bombs!

The hilarious thing is, IT'S PAISLEY!!!!!!! It's not even a keffiyeh. Look closely (beyond the fringe & the fact that it's black & white) and you can see the flowers and curves.

Rachael has a neon orange kitchen with bad lighting as her Food Network set for 30 min meals. All that money and still no taste. Usually wears the least flattering clothing she can find, and wears it loud and proud. Here's betting she couldn't even pronounce 'keffiyeh' if her life depended on it. To the wacky folks here who are saying that wearing it is the same as wearing a swastika:I guess as much as I disagree with your attitude, I have to see the comparison in a symbol that has old meaning and was used in a way that had nothing to do with it's origin. BTW, when you support the basic human rights of the Palestinians, you are supporting PEOPLE, not terrorists. Plenty of Palestinians are just trying to live their lives while the Prime Minister of Israel declares he will unleash a "holocaust" upon them. Nice.

|"Scratch that – incensed conservatives." - No, no, just people who have a social conscious. You don't need to be a hipster d-bag nor a "no-spin-zone" kind of guy to understand this. What once stood for the legitimate right for a group of people to govern themselves now stands for a murderous entity of people who can't have repeatedly shown that they either can't, nor are unwilling to govern themselves.

It's pretty much on par with the Swastika these days. Sure - I'm all for raising up the German people after WWI - but I'm pretty sure exterminating groups of people and taking over the rest of the world failed to achieve that...|

While I usually ignore garbage on the internet I sometimes make special exceptions, this is one of them.

First off, the middle eastern people are no different than Americans. Now on the very superficial level you can make an argument they are very different, but that's for someone shallow to come along and do.

They are a people that have strong beliefs and are very passionate about their views. I find it very unfortunate that they feel that violence is the only way to reach those views, but really are we any different? 600k dead Iraqi's since we invaded Iraq 7 years ago. That's almost 100k people a year dying because of an incident the US government began.

Also anyone throwing around Jihad as if it means holy war is a fool. A Jihad is just a protest, its a protest against some sort of inner conflict or an outer one. The whole holy war schenanigans is probably Fox new's doing.

As for WWI and WWII. After WWI, the US, UK, and France (and probably a few other nations) drilled Germany's economy into the shitter. People were so poor that no amount of pooling up money could get them enough for some bread, the people were destitute. Hitler would of NEVER been able to do what he did without this horrible situation that these other major nations caused. He didn't even run on the 'kill the jews' line, he told the German people he could save them and he slowly, and meticulously moved them towards the murder of the Jewish people.

Who else has slowly and meticulously moved an entire nation to attack and kill another group of people in recent times?

The German people were not evil, just as the people of the middle east are not evil. It's conflicting views that unfortunately get greatly out of hand, but whenever you whole heartedly think some magical creator is the reason you live then your generally going to get into some silly shit. Especially when your only reason for believing so is a book that was written buy humans.

Personally when I want enlightenment on computer repairs I don't read a book written by a chef, I go straight to the computer technicians and their literature. I feel the same way about faith, so until I get an email or honeygram from god personally I'll be highly skeptical.

We need to get over this gangster mentality, wearing something doesn't make you suddenly part of some group. Being a part of that group does, I'm pretty sure Rachel Ray isn't killing anyone, except for maybe a Diabetic or two.

We are in a situation that was already unfortunate (much like Germany post WWI) and we've decided to step in and make it MUCH WORSE (like Germany after the treaty who's name i'm forgetting), so you know what is going to happen? Whenever people enter desperate times, lots of people die.

Hardly has to do with fashion.

Interestingly, similar scarves to the keffiyeh are very popular in Cambodia. They call it a krama, and from a glance it looks very much the same.

http://www.agirpourlecambodge.org/images/fille_krama.jpg

(They're more common in black, actually)

100% agree with #47. Anyway CR:

First of all, suicide bombers don't go out on a mission looking VERY ARAB, sporting a keffiyeh and all.

Second, there has been a mass slaughter of those WEARING the keffiyeh as well. I assume you know this, so why am I even restating the obvious.

Third, the sign of swastika was ADOPTED by Hitler's maniacal movement, it wasn't a German symbol in pre-Hitler times. As a cultural icon it existed elsewhere, mainly the Sub-Indian continent. And we still use the swastika (in its more traditional design) in the Sub-Indian continent, though the meaning is different because of the context. I've seen it mostly used in religious ceremonies, etc. A keffiyeh is a piece of clothing that existed long before Israel did.

Zionist terrorists wear yamulkes when they murder worshipers at the El Aksar mosque or kill the Israeli Prime Minister, to name just two examples.

Shouldn't other Jews stop wear that head wear?

“Keffiyeh is also called a Shemagh and is used by almost every military force in the Middle East right now. You can buy it at most Army-Navy stores and it is very popular amongst British, Australian, and US troops. It is not only used by the troops to help cover their mouths and faces during sand storms, but worn as a scarf to prevent sunburn along the back of their necks during the day.”

matty: actually, I'd say that a keffiyeh is more benign than a yarmulke: the latter is a symbol of religious obligation, the former is just a symbol that you live in a warm climate. :)

First of all wearing a keffiye is as benign as wearing a yarmulkah.

Second, it's not a keffiye

Third, people who are outraged at this would do well not to ever visit a DD as it is a good source of income for immigrants of that faith - as well as many other faiths, ethnic groups and nationalities.

That said, those who would not go there for that reason are racists and don't deserve the delicios coffee that is made there.

I love DD and it loves me.

Wow.. how absolutely retarded.

This scarf is as common in the Arab world as blue jeans and white t-shirts are in the West.

What's next? Cargo pants? Sandals?

What this really says is "Dunkin Donuts caves to right-wing racists and xenophobe fundamentalists."

Awesome.. just one more reason for me to not go there.

In fact, I think I'll write the President of Dunkin Donuts and tell him why I'm offically boycotting his Anti-Arab racists establishment.

#26 this is a camouflage frequently worn by US soldiers in Afganistan - it is a classic outfit of a local (kalashnikov, pushtun hat and a scarf), the horse is slightly unusual, they prefer donkeys.

and why did they choose Rachael for the ads? She is clearly overweight and is a bad image for something food related.
Dunkin should export this ad to the arab-overrun lands of Israel and try to do business there. Well probably they should reshoot the ad and have her hold a kalashnikov in the other hand to compliment the scarf and for a better impact.

"It's pretty much on par with the Swastika these days"

People have been wearing these in New York for over a year with zero outcry outside of the fashion police. Can you say that if somebody were wearing a length of swastikas around their neck?

Dirk -

Just a technical point of reference.

Malkin is not a "douchebag" or even a "douche" - suggesting so would imply a level of inability to NOT act like an asshole (think George Bush). Rather, she appears capable of rational thought, but instead veers toward bigoted invective.

Technically, she's a gash-mouthed bitch pig.

"pretty much on par with a swastika". Come out from under the bed, CR.

This would be stupid even if the scarf were actually a keffiya, since the keffiyah is worn by everyone in the region. Just because it's also worn by terrorists doesn't make it a symbol of a damn thing. Underground fighters, good and bad, dress in their local clothing.

And the fact that it's a paisley patterned scarf that merely REMINDS Malkin of a keffiyah is just further proof of how unhinged she and her gang of terrified cultural misinterpreters are.

urban outfitters part 2, i guess

usually worn as a scarf around the neck in hipster circles. Stores such as TALIBANANA.COM and TopShop stocked the item. (After some controversy, however, Urban Outfitters pulled the item.)

Sure - I'm all for raising up the German people after WWI - but I'm pretty sure exterminating groups of people and taking over the rest of the world failed to achieve that...

Sorry (or maybe amused?) to see that some ignoramuses are offended by what is essentially a Levantine country-bumpkin scarf. I guess for baby art students here in NY, it's the contemporary equivalent of those silly Guatemalan pillbox hats people were wearing in the 90's, to show how multicultural they were.

Incidentally, people wear variants on the keffiyeh in many parts of the Arab world. It's just a scarf. It's not associated with any particular religion, but with a geographical region. Sigh.
