Rachael Ray Dunkin Donuts Ad Pulled Over Keffiyeh
Heads up, hipsters: Those keffiyeh scarves, long associated with Yasir Arafat and the Palestinian resistance, are officially ‘so over.’ While the choice of keffiyeh as fashion accessory – at least when sported by sweaty, coked-up white kids mincing for Cobra Snake – has about as much political heft as a neon Che Guevara thong, the trend’s death knell has been rung not by a sudden surge in good taste but by divisive food celebrity Rachael Ray.
First Ray mortified hipsters by hosting a party at Austin’s SXSW indie rock snob-in, now she’s ruined the keffiyeh for everyone by wearing it in a Dunkin' Donuts commercial. Next she’ll want to join in the dodgeball games at McCarren Park Pool – unless she’s stopped, which the Dunkin' Donuts corporation seems determined to do; the company has yanked the commercial after getting complaints from incensed hipsters. Scratch that – incensed conservatives.
Fox News pundit Michelle Malkin led the pack decrying Ray’s keffiyeh, calling it a symbol of the “murderous Palestinian jihad.” But the company denies that their perky spokesperson was trying to subliminally link their iced coffee to Israeli opposition: “In a recent online ad, Rachael Ray is wearing a black-and-white silk scarf with a paisley design. It was selected by her stylist for the advertising shoot. Absolutely no symbolism was intended. However, given the possibility of misperception, we are no longer using the commercial.” Ray was too busy organizing a fabulous rock-throwing party in Ramallah to comment.

This is so stupid.

They should just pull her off, period. Bring back TMBG, those ads were at least catchy and fun.
[ report this ]
i wouldn't blame her for wearing it, i'd blame the art director...

Whatever Malkin says, does, or thinks, I say, do and think the opposite, so I guess I'm supporting Ms. Cacklelaugh on this one.

Sorry (or maybe amused?) to see that some ignoramuses are offended by what is essentially a Levantine country-bumpkin scarf. I guess for baby art students here in NY, it's the contemporary equivalent of those silly Guatemalan pillbox hats people were wearing in the 90's, to show how multicultural they were.
Incidentally, people wear variants on the keffiyeh in many parts of the Arab world. It's just a scarf. It's not associated with any particular religion, but with a geographical region. Sigh.
[ report this ]
Fashion is and ALWAYS HAS BEEN all about incorporating stylistic elements of other cultures. This scarf has lost political it's political significance and, like it or not, now it's just about motif and design, not politics.
[ report this ]
"Scratch that – incensed conservatives." - No, no, just people who have a social conscious. You don't need to be a hipster d-bag nor a "no-spin-zone" kind of guy to understand this. What once stood for the legitimate right for a group of people to govern themselves now stands for a murderous entity of people who can't have repeatedly shown that they either can't, nor are unwilling to govern themselves.
It's pretty much on par with the Swastika these days. Sure - I'm all for raising up the German people after WWI - but I'm pretty sure exterminating groups of people and taking over the rest of the world failed to achieve that...

I want to fuck Rachel Ray so badly. I want to hammer that velvet till it can't be hammered any more and then flip her over and feed my bama snake right up that starfish of hers.
She would bark like a chihuahua and beg me for more.
Broad's got crazy eyes.

Michelle Malkin is a complete and utter douchebag.

#7 (cncrocket) - Tell that to anyone who's family member was blown up by someone wearing a kefiyah in a video talking about how they're going to martyr themselves.

[ report this ]
I am not a stylist, but IMHO that scarf does not go with anything else she has on, it stands out like a girl in bikini on the streets of Kabul.
[ report this ]
Those "martyrs" were also wearing pants, CR. Should the family members be offended when Rachel Ray puts pants on to sell iced coffees?
This is such frivolous, hateful bullshit. Malkin and her kind are the worst kind of people.
[ report this ]
...
Ugh. It's just a scarf...
[ report this ]
"pretty much on par with a swastika". Come out from under the bed, CR.
This would be stupid even if the scarf were actually a keffiya, since the keffiyah is worn by everyone in the region. Just because it's also worn by terrorists doesn't make it a symbol of a damn thing. Underground fighters, good and bad, dress in their local clothing.
And the fact that it's a paisley patterned scarf that merely REMINDS Malkin of a keffiyah is just further proof of how unhinged she and her gang of terrified cultural misinterpreters are.
[ report this ]
The absurdity of this is that she is not wearing a keffiyeh. It's just your average paisley scarf. The real atrocity here is that her stylist thought that it was a good idea to wrap a scarf around a woman who has NO neck.

#9...

#14 - Cheap Cynicism: Pants? Seriously - that's your argument? "Suicide bombers wear pants"? What's next - "suicide bombers are all human beings and should family members be offended because Rachel Ray is a human".
And on that note, can I interest you in some authentic Nazi underpants?
[ report this ]
Dirk -
Just a technical point of reference.
Malkin is not a "douchebag" or even a "douche" - suggesting so would imply a level of inability to NOT act like an asshole (think George Bush). Rather, she appears capable of rational thought, but instead veers toward bigoted invective.
Technically, she's a gash-mouthed bitch pig.
[ report this ]
"It's pretty much on par with the Swastika these days"
People have been wearing these in New York for over a year with zero outcry outside of the fashion police. Can you say that if somebody were wearing a length of swastikas around their neck?
[ report this ]
"The real atrocity here is that her stylist thought that it was a good idea to wrap a scarf around a woman who has NO neck."
Word to that. Screechy McJazzhands is shaped like a fireplug.
[ report this ]
reminds me of seeing some (hip) dude wearing a tallis as a scarf...
now that took some balls, since it has a direct religious association, unlike this ugly scarf this hoebag is wearing. or is the scarf wearing an ugly hoebag? i can never get that right...
[ report this ]
'people', err I mean clueless lemmings, have been wearing them for far longer than a year as a fashion accessory, along with their Che t-shirts. More rationalizing from self-hating lefty hipster douchebags. And yes I would bang Rachel and Michelle at the same time...
[ report this ]
and why did they choose Rachael for the ads? She is clearly overweight and is a bad image for something food related.
Dunkin should export this ad to the arab-overrun lands of Israel and try to do business there. Well probably they should reshoot the ad and have her hold a kalashnikov in the other hand to compliment the scarf and for a better impact.
[ report this ]
Yeah, I guess the US Special Forces fall into this bucket as well:

#26 this is a camouflage frequently worn by US soldiers in Afganistan - it is a classic outfit of a local (kalashnikov, pushtun hat and a scarf), the horse is slightly unusual, they prefer donkeys.

i agree with CR but mostly I agree with Ph because like #24, i'd do michelle too.
(my penis is bi-partisan)
Why aren't there more picture of rachel ray's butt on the internet?? yummo!
[ report this ]
She looks like a terrorist to me. Send her to Gitmo for a military tribunal to be held at an unspecified time in the far future.
[ report this ]
Frck the scarf. DunkinDonuts is disgusting. Guess there ain't a lot of meaningfull gigs out there.
[ report this ]
*19 - CR: I'm not really sure you understand your own argument, buddy.
[ report this ]
Wow.. how absolutely retarded.
This scarf is as common in the Arab world as blue jeans and white t-shirts are in the West.
What's next? Cargo pants? Sandals?
What this really says is "Dunkin Donuts caves to right-wing racists and xenophobe fundamentalists."
Awesome.. just one more reason for me to not go there.
In fact, I think I'll write the President of Dunkin Donuts and tell him why I'm offically boycotting his Anti-Arab racists establishment.
[ report this ]
You should start selling neon Che Guevara thongs. Now.
[ report this ]
Hmmm...seeing & hearing less of Rachel Ray cannot be such a bad thing. Annoying motor-mouth.
[ report this ]
It's not a keffiyeh. It's a cheap-ass black and white scarf with messy fringe. That stylist will be lucky if she ever works again.
And #25/Kreo, she's not "overweight." We're just accustomed to seeing talking skeletons on TV.
[ report this ]
At our madrassah, we're hopelessly addicted to Rachel Ray's snickerdoodles! Some of the children are, however, getting a bit overweight and a few missed points during i.e.d. exercises, but overall, we love Rachel Ray and we await Karachi's first Dunkin Donuts with eager...limbs!

First of all wearing a keffiye is as benign as wearing a yarmulkah.
Second, it's not a keffiye
Third, people who are outraged at this would do well not to ever visit a DD as it is a good source of income for immigrants of that faith - as well as many other faiths, ethnic groups and nationalities.
That said, those who would not go there for that reason are racists and don't deserve the delicios coffee that is made there.
I love DD and it loves me.
[ report this ]
Also while I find RR hot, I would prefer if she comminicated by any means but speaking.
Finally,
If Giada de Laurentis was the DD spokeswoman, I would not eat anything but Dunkin Donuts as long as the campaing went on.
Delish!
[ report this ]
matty: actually, I'd say that a keffiyeh is more benign than a yarmulke: the latter is a symbol of religious obligation, the former is just a symbol that you live in a warm climate. :)
(Need I add that CR is an idiot who has no idea what he's talking about? Well, as it happens, yes.)
[ report this ]
holy typos @ my posts.
DM - I did not know that!

I like me a keffiyeh, looks comfy.
Malkin is a total prud who probably needs a good hard fuck real bad so to loosen up her tight dry pussy.
CR is a total idiot, stupidest comments I have seen today.
And I love RR!!

“Keffiyeh is also called a Shemagh and is used by almost every military force in the Middle East right now. You can buy it at most Army-Navy stores and it is very popular amongst British, Australian, and US troops. It is not only used by the troops to help cover their mouths and faces during sand storms, but worn as a scarf to prevent sunburn along the back of their necks during the day.”

Is Malkin even relevant?
What next Michael Savage objects to the Charmin Bears as gay?
[ report this ]
Rachel Ray is launching a jihad on her body with those donuts

Zionist terrorists wear yamulkes when they murder worshipers at the El Aksar mosque or kill the Israeli Prime Minister, to name just two examples.
Shouldn't other Jews stop wear that head wear?
[ report this ]
100% agree with #47. Anyway CR:
First of all, suicide bombers don't go out on a mission looking VERY ARAB, sporting a keffiyeh and all.
Second, there has been a mass slaughter of those WEARING the keffiyeh as well. I assume you know this, so why am I even restating the obvious.
Third, the sign of swastika was ADOPTED by Hitler's maniacal movement, it wasn't a German symbol in pre-Hitler times. As a cultural icon it existed elsewhere, mainly the Sub-Indian continent. And we still use the swastika (in its more traditional design) in the Sub-Indian continent, though the meaning is different because of the context. I've seen it mostly used in religious ceremonies, etc. A keffiyeh is a piece of clothing that existed long before Israel did.
[ report this ]
Interestingly, similar scarves to the keffiyeh are very popular in Cambodia. They call it a krama, and from a glance it looks very much the same.

(They're more common in black, actually)

While I usually ignore garbage on the internet I sometimes make special exceptions, this is one of them.
First off, the middle eastern people are no different than Americans. Now on the very superficial level you can make an argument they are very different, but that's for someone shallow to come along and do.
They are a people that have strong beliefs and are very passionate about their views. I find it very unfortunate that they feel that violence is the only way to reach those views, but really are we any different? 600k dead Iraqi's since we invaded Iraq 7 years ago. That's almost 100k people a year dying because of an incident the US government began.
Also anyone throwing around Jihad as if it means holy war is a fool. A Jihad is just a protest, its a protest against some sort of inner conflict or an outer one. The whole holy war schenanigans is probably Fox new's doing.
As for WWI and WWII. After WWI, the US, UK, and France (and probably a few other nations) drilled Germany's economy into the shitter. People were so poor that no amount of pooling up money could get them enough for some bread, the people were destitute. Hitler would of NEVER been able to do what he did without this horrible situation that these other major nations caused. He didn't even run on the 'kill the jews' line, he told the German people he could save them and he slowly, and meticulously moved them towards the murder of the Jewish people.
Who else has slowly and meticulously moved an entire nation to attack and kill another group of people in recent times?
The German people were not evil, just as the people of the middle east are not evil. It's conflicting views that unfortunately get greatly out of hand, but whenever you whole heartedly think some magical creator is the reason you live then your generally going to get into some silly shit. Especially when your only reason for believing so is a book that was written buy humans.
Personally when I want enlightenment on computer repairs I don't read a book written by a chef, I go straight to the computer technicians and their literature. I feel the same way about faith, so until I get an email or honeygram from god personally I'll be highly skeptical.
We need to get over this gangster mentality, wearing something doesn't make you suddenly part of some group. Being a part of that group does, I'm pretty sure Rachel Ray isn't killing anyone, except for maybe a Diabetic or two.
We are in a situation that was already unfortunate (much like Germany post WWI) and we've decided to step in and make it MUCH WORSE (like Germany after the treaty who's name i'm forgetting), so you know what is going to happen? Whenever
