Hamptons Hooch Hubbub, Part 2

Wonder what a police raid on a Hamptons gallery that's serving-alcohol- at-a-party- without-a-license looks like? Plum TV was there for the spectacle that landed gallery owner Ruth Vered on the cover of the Daily News and Post.

Vered had been celebrating the opening of images from celebrity photographer Steven Klein, who said Vered's arrest for "serving wine at a gallery [was] ridiculous." Mark Heller, lawyer for Vered, told the Daily New, "It is my opinion that when we get to court, they will have to dismiss the charges and apologize," but the State Liquor Authority is firm with the hardline against people who don't apply for special $31/day permits. The SLA's Bill Crowley said, "You might think [other merchants or caterers who serve wine] are not licensed, but they may have a permit."

Here's a PDF of the SLA's Special Events Permit application--it's only three pages, but you need to submit a menu and diagram. And it turns out that Vered used to be a paratrooper for the Israeli reserves and was a cabdriver after immigrating to Queens.

I have new found respect for this woman. Not that i had heard of her before this incident but now I...I...don't mind her so much. :D

Some rich people always think they are above the law. Laws to them don't exist because they are "different".

Free Ruth! I love this woman, so awesome and defiant in the face of puritanical laws.

Although you can see some gin being taken away in the video - it seems like people are trying to understate the amount of alcohol by saying it was just wine and champagne.

But yeah, Ruth Vered is my homegirl.

They arrested her for failing to get a $31 permit??? $31! The police really have nothing better to do than arrest someone and close down a party for what amounts to a paperwork violation.

Do they also arrest people for failing to register their bicycles out there? Have they adopted the parading without a permit law? Do I need to go to culinary school before I can light a BBQ now too?

> Have they adopted the parading without a permit law?

Actually yes, and they have arrested a lot of people for violating it.

But otherwise you are totally right!

I wonder what that Nassau County cop who got struck by a drunk might think of these artsy patrons, tipsy with "wine", loading themselves into their Jaguars and Escalades and hitting The L.I.E. It's always innocent fun until you put someone into a Neurosciences I.C.U. bed. And Dearest Ruth needs to quit braying about her status and pay the fucking $32. How much art did she sell that night?

Enough with this story!

The cops were jerks for busting her, but they probably arrested her because she was being a jerk.

The only reason it is in the papers is because she has publicist friends.

I guess if you have some friends over and give them a few drinks the cops can arrest you. Where is the line crossed?

She looks like Leona Helmsley with funny glasses.

are there criminals out there that the police should focus on? arrested for serving wine at an art gallery? so lame.

Snoopy, the line is crossed when it is in a commercial space.
